I've actually deleted (rather than archived) the older talk material, it mostly replicated the material from the article en masse.

Kufi smacking[edit]

I'm glad you deleted it. As a Muslim, I think smacking somebody's kufi off is horribly rude. But I do think that, if it even exists, kufi-smacking should have some mention, since Wikipedia is intended as an online repository of all knowledge. There should also be some more information about the 'proper' uses of the Kufi as well (Islamic use and use in 'African-American popular culture'), since this article is little more than a stub. 217.17.112.93 12:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about some pictures?

Kufyah, iqal, hatta, shmagh are all synonyms of kufi. It is the head cover Middle-eastern men traditionally wore, especially in agricultural communities. There is absolutely no relation between Islam and kufi. Nowhere in the Quran or in Mohammed's teachings is it mentioned that men need to cover their heads. Due to the extreme heat and sun exposure, it would be a wise idea to cover the head. That applies world wide. In the desert however, the temperature fluctuation through the day and night give one a good reason to use a big cloth to cover the head by during the day, and a thin blanket to cover the whole head and face during sleep. It also comes in handy when dust storms show up out of nowhere. Muslim men's dress code is to cover the area below the navel (belly button) and above the knees. Do not Merge kufi and kofia[edit]

East and West African males wear different clothing and speak different languages. The two separate articles reflect the differences in culture, language, and dress. An authentic kufi is made of cotton with no openings. An authentic kofia, has small pin hole openings. They are two different hats from two different cultures. Most East African clothing was introduced by slave traders from Oman who used Swahili slaves to build an empire. West African clothing, however, had its origins in Kano, Kumasi, and Dakar. The biggest influences were the Islamic jihads conducted by the Fulani emirate, and the wealth and hegemony of the Gold Coast, Ashanti kings. The clothing of each region came from different historical circumstances. Please do not merge the articles. Wikipedia should reflect the differences in culture, language, and history.
