Etymology

I am moving this here as being prima facie odd

Its name (in Latin Alverna) is said to come from the Italian verb vernare, to make cold or freeze.

That implies that the mountain had no name in Latin until sometime after the Italian language had evolved. Seems odd. Not impossible! But Google is getting me nothing on this except Cath-Enc/Wikipedia mirrors. So I think we had better source it better before restoring. —Ian Spackman 19:44, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

What a delay... :) Yes, it may sound odd but do not forget Italian and Latin are essentially the same language. Anyway, the name seems to be Alvernia and the verb vernare is Latin too. --Erinaceus (talk) 21:41, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
