World War II veteran? Is there any source that can authoritatively confirm this? He'd have been pretty old, 49 if he joined the military in 1941 when the US entered the war. Seeing as he was only a farmer, not a doctor or someone with an occupational specialty needed for the war effort, it seems unlikely he would have served. World War I makes a lot more sense.
