Immigration issue[edit]

That paragraph is POV since it describe only aspect against government activities and does not provide sources. It also use terms (like "deportation") that don't belong to the proper process (it's not the description used in the official dispositions, only the writer's opinion). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.68.43.195 (talk) 14:59, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's more POV there, and press reportage instead of information, in the story of the "attack". The passage Several of the civilian employees including interpreter, Marco Bartolo, returned to work and performed their jobs in an exceptional manner. is a pretty good example of what should NOT be here. Wanted: area and population[edit]

I miss simple figures telling the size of the island as well as the population for Lampedusa. Does someone know? Fomalhaut76 (talk) 09:40, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As for size:
http://www.isoladilampedusa.it/
The punctuation is peculiar—the capitalisation the occ.s of ‘nel’ and the brackets. But is seems to mean:
The island has an area of 20.2 km2 and a perimeter of 26 km. It’s 8.9 km from east to west; varies between 1.1 km and 3.5 km north to south. Highest point is Albero Sole at 133 m. Lowest point is 2 m above sea level. [So the Med is 2 metres below sea-level?]
If you think that’s a sufficiently reliable source, do Put it into proper English and add it to the article! Sorry, but I don’t have time at the moment.
Resident population figures from the 2001 census ought to be available from the 2001 census at http://dawinci.istat.it
Yes here they are. 5,282 in total, 4,297 of whom in the capoluogo. (Case Sparse refers to people living in scattered dwellings not attached to a distinctive istat-recognised-and-named settlement.) Hmmn: Istat gives the elevation range as 0 to 195 m above sea-level.

'illegal immigrants' or 'asylum seekers' ?[edit]

Don't know Italian law, but most countries have a 'presumption of innocence'. Seeking asylum is not illegal. The language here is not just PO?v, but actually prejudicial ? --195.137.93.171 (talk) 06:44, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The article sounds one-way mentioning only illegal immigration and not considering that many of those landing on the shore of Lampedusa are refugees fleeing their country. --Sal73x (talk) 19:34, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how having a revolution forces you to flee the country, it should be the other way round. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.97.71.169 (talk) 09:36, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lampedusa nominated to win the Nobel Peace prize[edit]

Berlusconi a Lampedusa: candideremo l'isola al Nobel per la Pace. I'm wondering about the suitability of listing this on the article. Does anyone have any objections? Eug.galeotti (talk) 22:10, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The day that Lampedusa will really be candidate for a Nobel Prize it could be suitable. Untill then it remains only something said by an Italian politician for his own Political campaign. Berlusconi has also promised to build a Golf course on the island when on Lampedusa there is no fresh water available and it has to be carried by ships. Personally I think that untill further actions towards the candidacy of Lampedua the whole thing is only speculation and not suitable for this article.--Sal73x (talk) 21:38, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, the 30/03/2011 at 11:00AM Berlusconi has also promised to empty the island of all refugees in 48-60 hours. Well, 61 hours later on the island of Lampedua (pop. 4.500) there are still 3.800 refugees. Does anyone really think that Lampedusa will ever be candidate to the Nobel Prize?--Sal73x (talk) 21:54, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also object. An island is not even eligible for nomination, so Berlusconi is either talking pure nonsense, or joking. --Roentgenium111 (talk) 22:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I thought there was something absurd with saying Lampedusa could be nominated for a Nobel Prize. I myself don't believe it, but I tried just for laughs and seeing if it met any of Wikipedia's requirements. It would certainly be derisory. Eug.galeotti (talk) 17:21, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Surrender in 1941 - A wonderful farce[edit]

In 1941, Sergeant Sydney Cohen, a RAF pilot, quite unwittingly and single-handedly, captured the tiny Island of Lampedusa, just 200km south of Sicily. He then accepted the surrender of a garrison of 4,300 Italian troops stationed there. This episode became the subject of a famous Yiddish play 'The King of Lampedusa', which became one of the most successful Yiddish productions ever, with 200 non-stop performances, and was broadcast by the BBC, which boosted War-time morale.

Cohen joined the RAF in 1941 and went to serve on Malta. While on a mission from the island in his Swordfish biplane, he went off course and had to make an emergency landing with his crew on the Island of Lampedusa - the home of a disgruntled Italian garrison. He immediately offered his surrender, but he related, 'A crowd of Italians came out to meet us and we put our hands up to surrender, but then we saw they were all waving white sheets shouting, "No, no - We surrender." The whole island was surrendering to us!' — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.2.26 (talk) 08:02, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
