From the Islands or New York City?[edit]

I read over at IMDb.com that LHJ was born in St. Thomas, but on another it says he was born in NYC. Anyone know which one is correct?

Nevertheless, from VI Online: People from the Virgin Islands are called Virgin Islanders and based on the island of residence are called St. Thomian, St. Johnian, Crucian and Water Islanders respectively. So out of respect to his heritage, I don't think it's right to refer to him as African-American, though I don't think there's a Virgin Islanders category here on Wikipedia? Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs/Cartoon voices[edit]

What's with the hyphen?[edit]

In the credits to "Welcome Back Kotter," the hyphen in his name is placed between "Lawrence" and "Hilton," implying that his first name is "Lawrence-Hilton" and his last name is "Jacobs." His IMDB page lists him that way as well. This jibes with the fact that his parents' last name is "Jacobs." Indeed, on the Internet one finds three forms:

Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (no hyphen)
Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs (hyphen between first and middle names)
Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (hyphen between middle and last names)

He seems to have used the first two forms interchangeably throughout his career, with no hyphen being the most common form in recent years. But I could find no original sources for hyphenating as "Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs" as this Wikipedia page does as of this writing.

In all the title screens, movie posters, and album covers I could find, as well as his own social media pages, he is either credited as "Lawrence Hilton Jacobs" or "Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs". I thought perhaps he used one form early in his career and the other later, but the evidence says otherwise. In the 1970's we find both "Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs" (e.g., Welcome Back, Kotter) and "Lawrence Hilton Jacobs" (e.g., album covers). In his more recent series he is usually credited as "Lawrence Hilton Jacobs" (no hyphen. On his own current social media pages, his name appears as "Lawrence Hilton Jacobs" on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/lhjman/) but as "Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs" on Twitter (https://twitter.com/LHJofficial).

But "Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs" is found only on Wikipedia and IMDB, and on random news stories (probably because writers often use Wikipedia and IMDB to verify the spelling of celebrities' names).

Since there is no basis for "Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs" (as Wikipedia spells it in the title and article), I am going to update the page to "Lawrence Hilton Jacobs" since that seems to be the predominant form he uses currently, while adding a note that he is also credited as "Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs".
