The significance of the title Valeria
I note the claim that this is a geographical title, but other explanations have also been given: (1) that valeria means 'strong, robust' (from the verb valere); (2) that it commemorates Marcus Valerius Messala; and (3) that it commemorates Claudius's wife Valeria Messalina.
I think, at the very least, a citation is needed for this claim.
The claim of a geographical origin is unlikely. Ammianus Marcellinus 19.11.4 states that the province was named in honour of Valeria, the daughter of Diocletian. The legion had left this region almost three centuries earlier and borne the title for at least two centuries. The question of the legion's titles needs a lot more work. 18.104.22.168 (talk) 20:10, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
