I've read an article that wrote that Limitanei were formed out of peasants-soldiers. I think the term peasant-soldiers is horribly wrong , though there's some truth in it. He might have been talking about germanic tribes that joined the army. This is just a thought not a certenty. A more modest way of talking about this issue would be to describe these armies as man not being Roman by origin. Thus probably not owning the Roman Citizen rights.

Not really, some of the limitanei are actually Roman legions. And additionally, citizen rights are given to all free person in the Roman empire during the reign of Caracalla. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.74.77.75 (talk) 14:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
