Table Sorting[edit]

It seems like the convention in sports articles is generally to list players chronologically, which also simplifies maintenance. Does anyone have an argument for why alphabetical is a better fit here? The only one that comes to mind for me is some listed players don't have this info, but this seems to be an article shortcoming than can be addressed (the ones I checked already have their own articles with this info listed) rather than an inherent problem that must be accommodated indefinitely.
