Commodities exchanges, as I understand it, usually trade futures contracts on commodities. Such as trading contracts to receive something, say corn, in a certain month. A farmer raising corn can sell a future contract on his corn, which will not be harvested for several month, and guarantee the price he will be paid when he delivers; a breakfast cereal producer buys the contract now and guarantees the price won't go up when it is delivered. This protects the farmer from price droips and the buyer from price rises.

Specualtors also buy and sell the futures contracts to make a profit and provide liquidity to the system.

How about the Ethiopian Commodities Exchange. I read it was to be started in Sep 2007. Does anyone know, whether it's working out? The project head, Eleni G. Medhin (PhD), gave a talk about this at TED. JanCK (talk) 12:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
