Heart's Delight/Islington[edit]

I noticed that Islington was not listed but Island Cove (Trinity Bay) was instead. Since the community changed its name from Island Cove to Islington in 1911, I made an edit.

I also changed Heart's Delight to Heart's Delight/Islington. The two communities have been considered "joined" for some time now and the name, when referred to in an "official" context, is presented as Heart's Delight/Islington. Having lived in the community for nearly 19 years, I did feel the need to make such an edit.

If this list was intended to present the original names of Newfoundland and Labrador communities, please let me know. Otherwise, the two community names previously described have now been brought up to date.

The intention, at least mine was, to give a complete list of each and every community that did existed and was resettled and those that still survive today. Fore those with a name change or no longer exists should get redirected to the appropriate article describing the community of today. The article would then cover the topic of discovery, settlement, name origins, name changes, resettlement, etc. This way, again as I see it, would be a great first point to start research for those seeking names of communities that once existed. Take for example Admiral's Cove, Fermuse Harbour (Newfoundland), it redirects to Port Kirwan. HJKeats 19:01, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying your intention for this article. As there was no information on either Heart's Delight or Islington (Island Cove), I decided to go ahead with the edit anyway. I have been considering starting articles on both communities and, should I do this before someone else, the idea of "redirecting" will certainly come in handy.

Comprehensive List?[edit]

Is this list comprehensive? I recently made a link for Renews-Cappahayden in the Chance Cove Provincial Park article but I can't find that town on this list. Rmhermen 00:53, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

Photos within this list[edit]

IMHO, photographs should not be posted in this list of communities. This photograph for the community should be placed in the article about the community. HJKeats 11:33, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos[edit]

Thanks, I had accidently found the old photo of Outer Cove and as I hadn't put in an article I was placing it there as an example of the little cove's around the province. It will be removed asap I get back to editing the list and putting in more names, I only managed to lengthen A. WayneRay 13:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

A Section[edit]

I have finished adding all the names under A & T and put in small amounts of informatin on most of them. I just added all the categories and see also links and will put in the reference material next week. Then I will finish updating the T section WayneRay 18:56, 8 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Finishing the J, K, and L and I, T and U and a few others are completed WayneRay (talk) 20:01, 21 January 2009 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

stubs[edit]

Empty articles are misleading - they conceal the fact (shown by red links) that an article is required. Do not create Green's Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador until you are ready to give it some useful content. -- RHaworth 07:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but again you and others fail to see the big picture, there is a Wiki Project that about 9 of us are working on. I agree with you however about incomplete articles but this is different,

Wikipedia:WikiProject Newfoundland and Labrador & the one you found my photo on: List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador are being worked on piece by piece, some are supplying articles , some are supplying and working on links, I am working on photos, and others are doing what they can with support etc. I have completed the A, T, U and most of the B Lists with , for right now, small amounts of information OR A PHOTO, to get things going. I know you are trying to help but there is a bigger picture, Thanks for your input, I will post this conversation on the Talk pages and see what others think. StatsCan Listing[edit]

If you were to mozy on over to User:Super cyclist/Newfoundland and Labrador, I have put together a current listing (as of the 2001 Census) of the cities, towns, villages, census-designated places and unincorporated places, as per Statistics Canada. I know the subdivisions are little-used, but give a sense of division. I don't feel comfortable replacing this article with the above-mentioned table, as there are many articles listed here that are not in my listing (and vice versa). Use as much as you can! FUNgus guy 11:43, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If the same towns and villages show up on both I think yours is a much more organized list although you might want to alphabetize it Wikistyle, Thanks, WayneRay 14

Name of Province[edit]

Newfoundland is the name of an island, not of the province. There is no "Wabush, Newfoundland", etc. Wabush is in Labrador, or in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, but it is not in Newfoundland.

Refinement of list[edit]

The list, although very useful, is getting long for anyone wishing to extract information about a particular community. The coast of Newfoundland and Labrador has a long history of ports and fishing communities that have grown, prospered and subsequently died out. Some of these communities were forcibly re-settled while others just simply died because of changes in the mode of transportation and the requirement to be near areas of available public services. I propose that each of the communities be categorize in a listing to highlight those exact same sentiments as above to identify the history of these communities past and present. May I suggest the following categories:

  1. Cities
  2. Incorporated towns and communities
  3. Re-settled communities and fishing villages
  4. Abandoned communities and fishing villages
  5. Re-named communities and fishing villages

The latter should then have the original name with subsequent and current name. What say you folk of NL interest, shall we make a list that will better represent our province! Your suggestions are kindly welcome before changes are made to the list. --HJKeats 15:36, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely, I agree. I had or we had, bolded the larger communities already but that is not enough. There was a link on the Talk page that listed the abandoned towns so it shouldn't be too hard to divide all this up. However, that said, would all this be on one page or would there be new pages and the List page to have only the headings?? I will be in Stephenville for the Come Home Year festivities from July 30-August 6th 2007 if anyone is going to be there also I am having a photo show of historical photographs in the local library. I hope to take some photos of the out laying villages as well as there is hardly any good old photos in the Commons. WayneRay 20:38, 12 June 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
I tried to put the bolded incorporated cities at the top of the A & B list but after I finished I saw that someone had bolded empty pages on the original list so that won't work. I will work on it if that is how you were intending it to be HJKeats ?? Or put a whole alpha section seperate of the old communities list? WayneRay 19:59, 13 June 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

The list, as it is currently being modified, is not reflecting what I had envisaged as required refinements to the list. There are only three classified cited in the province, St. John's, Mount Pearl and Corner Brook. To label major centers as cities becomes rather confusing. I had envisaged section (sub-sections) from the list I shown above with a lead in paragraph or two to describe the criteria and information about the section (sub-section). Then underneath those paragraphs would appear the list of cities, and communities that fall under those sections. --HJKeats 13:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK I see what you mean, I didn't know your whole structure and it can easily be rectified. Why don't you use the subsection I created for the Cities you mentioned and the content and I will put back the information on the main page. Oh and what about Stephenville with over 8000, isn't that a city? WayneRay 16:21, 15 June 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
I don't know what would be appropriate for the structure of NL communities, but look at these different approaches:

A good start to identify incorporated municipalities is the Department of Municipal Affairs official list, as found here. --HJKeats (talk) 15:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photo updates on Commons[edit]

I have just organized and added new and previously unlinked photographs onto Commons, under a page by the same name as this. See the Commons link at the top of the main article. WayneRay (talk) 18:52, 23 November 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

The Settlements, Newfoundland and Labrador seems to list all the communities in Newfoundland and Labrador that start with "the". To separate those communities and list them on a separate article does not make sense. They should be listed along with all the other communities in the province.

Neelix (talk) 23:11, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I had not seen this page before and the concensus was to divide the page up into Cities and leave the smaller incorporated towns (bold blue links in article) and have the small settlements and unincorporated towns and abandoned villages separate. The person who started this has been absent from editing for a while as have I. So you get my vote to merge WayneRay (talk) 18:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
LOL I remember doing this page now to save space on the main article page, oh well, all back to normal WayneRay (talk) 15:00, 22 January 2008 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Citys[edit]

Can anyone tell me the 5 largest cities in Newfoundland and Labrador?

I posted to the N&L WikiProject Talkpage, but figured it might get more attention if I brought this here; there are ten "The Gut"s in Newfoundland & Labrador, none are listed as communities; the ref here was easy to find, of course, not that PROD-droppers ever look. I left the original text which said a settlement of this name is near Deadman's Bay, which is somewhere up by Twillingate, but CGNDB only lists guts and coves and such. A gut is a narrow channel in Newfanese, right? Or a narrow cove? And just a heads up; doubtless there are lots of items in this list that are unreferenced and may yet get prodded, I'm wondering how many may already have been, so anyone who has the time and inclination and more local knowledge than I have is welcome to undertake the time to at least add a CGNDB tag, I don't know if NL has a similar system to BC Names (formerly BCGNIS; if so, such a reference would bolster others from trying to prod with 'no proof this exists'. Notable ones should have their own article, and the page given should be a disambiguation page; and the one this was originally about, we'll need a cite for the settlement, not just the gut or cove it's at.Skookum1 (talk) 12:01, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Avondale is a community in CBC, Conception Bay Central. Avondale "North" is irrelevant. 98.143.128.76 (talk) 16:46, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Avondale is an incorporated town in its own right, not a community inside another municipality. This is not a list of towns and cities — it is a list of unincorporated communities, such as city neighbourhoods and outport villages and other named places that are not self-contained municipalities. Towns and cities are listed at List of municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador, not here, and Avondale is already in that list. Bearcat (talk) 16:56, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This list is incorrect in several instances. First of all, Heart’s Delight, Heart’s Desire, and Heart’s Content have each been fully incorporated since the 1970’s. The Same also applies to New Perlican. Argentia hasn’t been lived in as a town for many, many years, and is just a place where a few businesses still operate, including the Ferry, but no inhabitants at all. If these few that I know of are wrong, many more might be wrong as well. 173.237.99.21 (talk) 22:07, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I deleted New Perlican, Heart's Content, Heart's Desire and Argentia from the list. Your are right about this list containing some errors, because I have litteraly made dozens upon dozens of corrections in it and it is still not completely right, even though it is certainly in much better shape than it originally was. I however left Heart's Delight in the list, because that place is not incorporated in and of itself (it is part of the town of Heart's Delight-Islington, which consists of two communities).
