Notes

This is a first attempt. A few notes:

1. The whole thing probably needs making more typically Wikipedic (I'm a newbie).

2. I entered only the first 20 countries because someone out there can probably do the entire WRI CAIT list (186 countries) with automated code. The data is available in comma-something-or-othered-something-or-other format.

3. CAIT has equivalent data for 1990 and 1995.

4. I have a map of these values but am uncertain about CAIT's policy regarding copyright.

5. It would be nice to have flags next to the country names.

6. More internal and external links.

7. I started looking into Wikipedia's coverage of per capita (shouldn't that be "per-capita" when used as an adjective?) emissions because the existing Wikipedia per capita emissions page is CO2-only and, even then, ignores CO2 from land-use change (see talk-page at "List of countries by carbon dioxide emissions per capita"), so I wasn't surprised to see Indonesia ranked so highly in CAIT's table (it's at 24). But I was astonished by the per capita all-GHG-emissions-including-land-use-change number for Zambia. It turns out that almost all of this is due to an evaluation of land-use change provided by one (reputable - but is one enough?) study. Zambia is rapidly cutting down its forests, and it has been rapidly cutting them down for at least 15 years. Combine that rapid loss-of-sink with a lowish population and even Zambia gets ranked 11th in the world as a current contributor to global warming. This sort of thing needs explaining, probably at great length and with many cross-references.

These ranking without land-use are interesting, maybe it will be better to let it in separate column and add also without land-use tonnes figures as next column. --Jklamo 13:55, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

In Sweden we have a law that says that every area where trees have been cut down must immediately be re-planted with trees. The result is that we today have more trees in Sweden than ever before in history. That is a good example which lowers emissions of carbon dioxide. An example of the opposite is Brazil, where forests (jungle) are cut down at a horrifying rate and it is not replaced with new trees. The oldest company in Sweden is Stora. It started 700 years ago and it is our biggest owner of forests. Stora has learned over the centuries how to manage forests, which cover around 70% of Sweden (my estimate).Stora recently merged with Enso, the biggest forestry company in Finland to form one of biggest forestry companies in the world, Stora Enso.Roger491127 (talk) 09:30, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Combining several lists

Having just updated List of countries by greenhouse gas emissions per capita for 2005 (most recent data available from WRI CAIT 6.0), I was looking at some of the related list-of-countries articles. Specifically CO2 per capita, CO2 and GDP to CO2 ratio

It is my intent to create an article titled List of countries by greenhouse gas emissions based on 2005 data. I intend to leave CO2 per capita as a separate article but include the data for co2, co2 per capita, ghg, ghg per capita, gpd, and ghg/gdp (inverse of what the present has, so it's carbon intensity) all in one chart. At that point ghg per capita, CO2 and GDP to CO2 ratio could all be deleted/merged since they would be redundant. Single chart will make all the data sortable so anyone can order the countries by the metric of choice. I intend to make the rank column number by total ghg emission numbers (without land-use.) CO2 per capita would remain as a distinct article since it has data for that metric going back to 1990 which will not be recreated in the article I'm proposing.

It's going to take me some time to generate the new page as I intend to create some software to process and format the data for me so that

1. It will be less work in the future
2. I will be less likely to make a transcription error.

I'll be generating this on my user page before creating the new article, but wanted to give everyone a heads up in case there are concerns or someone is just vehemently opposed to this for some reason. I'm considering leaving in the 2000 data for ghg per capita with & without land-use because land-use data is not available after that year and it gives at least some idea of what impact it has on a nation's numbers even though the most recent data is 9 years out of date.

This hopefully will create a single article in which all of this data is available, comparable and sortable - which I think will be better for the reader. Because of the size it will not be possible to include multiple years. Possible ways to deal with that would be to create one article per year, or to only have the article with the most recent year, or some hybrid of these two.

I'm posting this in all related articles, but it might be valuable to confine the discussion to one place. I propose that we use the List_of_countries_by_greenhouse_gas_emissions_per_capita talk page to collect the common discussions on. Mishlai (talk) 05:26, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Another source

The Yale Environmental Performance Index has another set of estimates for GHG emissions per capita (including land use change) for 2005 (full data set (xls)). --The Cunctator (talk) 14:23, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Data wrong?

Central African republic figures are wrong by a factor of 100. Figures should be approximately 0.12 tonnes per capita, not 12 tonnes per capita. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.189.116.49 (talk) 15:36, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

I don't know how to regenerate the figures presented in this table. I accessed the website where these figures supposedly came from and saw there completely different figures. For example, Belize which is ranked here 1st by far with 93.9 tonnes of CO2-equivalent per capita including land use change (almost twice as oil-producing Qatar!) is ranked on the referred website 167, with a mere 4.0 tonnes per capita. For Belize to have so much emission due to land use change it would probably have to be logging ten times more than Brazil. Uruguay, on the other hand, is listed here as last, with 0.3 tonnes per capita whereas the website specifies 11.7 tonnes per capita, similar to her neighbors. Can the authors of this list produce a reliable source for these seemingly unlikely figures?--84.108.213.97 (talk) 00:00, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Main issue is that first author combined multiple sources and did not referened each number (or just at least those number differing from primary source). Note that for exapmle in CAIT GHG 2000 figures LULUCF are missing for some countries (including Belize and Qatar). If you have some reliable source with newer or at least equally old figures, feel free to use it to update the list. --Jklamo (talk) 22:36, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
