The title of this article (Former presidents who ran for the presidency) is problematic unless it is expanded to include presidents of countries other than the U.S. 165.189.91.148 19:43, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Taft[edit]

Should we add William Howard Taft to this list, since after his presidency he went on to serve as Chief Justice? I can understand its omission because he didn't *run* for office, but nonetheless he did *take* an office and it seems relevant. Collabi 22:14, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Although this really doesn't fit neatly, you could compare Taft with Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948), a former Governor of New York who was appointed to the Supreme Court of the U.S. by Taft in 1910 as an Associate Justice, resigned in 1916 to run unsuccessfully against Pres. Wilson, and was then appointed Chief Justice by Hoover in 1930 (serving until 1941). —— Shakescene (talk) 11:06, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hoover and Ford[edit]

Andrew Johnson[edit]

I see your point, though such an interpretation would mean the list would include all the presidents, and readers should then recognize it would be an odd way to title the content at List of presidents of the United States. @Paintspot and Mdewman6: May I suggest List of then-former United States presidents who ran for office, as I believe that would have the same meaning as the current title, and is two words shorter. If that's still not precise enough, List of then-former United States presidents who ran for other office is one word shorter than the current title.
