An Appeal[edit]

To whom it may concern: Hi! This is my first attempt at creating a page. I hope that it is noteworthy enough for wikipedia. I thought there might be some potential, some schools have rivalries going back to the 1800s in mass., I have heard. I thought we could sort by date, oldest ones first. Maybe we could have a cutoff, too, like: "rivalry must be at least 100 years old". Is this topic worthy of an article? Any thoughts AtLLo 16:23, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi this is my first reply from todays New York Times. PS I went to Needham High

America's oldest public high school, the Boston Latin School, is also half of America's oldest continuous Thanksgiving football rivalry. The Latin School Wolfpack has played the English High School Bulldogs every year since 1887. (Two high schools west of Boston, Needham and Wellesley, began a similar Thanksgiving rivalry in 1882, but they have not played every year.)

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE The true fact!!!!!!!!!

NEW LONDON CONNECTICUT VS NORWICH FREE ACADIMY The first game in this rivalry was 1875!! I did some research, and this is the oldest football rivalry, HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE, in this great nation. The next closest ones are a few high schools in Mass.

Wisconsin: Kewaunee vs. Algoma dates back to 1899.

Allegany High school and Fort Hill High School Cumberland, MD[edit]

Allegany and Fort Hill have been playing each other since 1936. Every year anywhere from 10,000 to 14,000 people show up to see these two teams play the last game of the regular season. The biggest crosstown rivalry in Maryland.

Central High School vs. Northeast High School?[edit]

On this list the rivalry beings in 1886, but the Northeast High School article claims a founding date of 1890, four years after the start of the rivalry. To add to the confusion the record of the games listed on the Central High School is different than the record on the list. Can someone please clarify and/or add a source for this information? Golem88991 00:59, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have updated the information to reflect the date that the Northeast High School website provides. It makes more sense if it is true that Northeast was not founded until 1890. Golem88991 19:19, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to Ted Silary, local high school reporter, the rivalry record is held by Northeast at 55-49-10. This is probably the total record including non-Thanksgiving games because they have played several times in non-Thanksgiving games in the past and now are currently in the same division and play each other during the regular season as well as on Thanksgiving.famw 07:12, 05 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From Wikipedia search. . .In addition, Germantown Academy shares the oldest continuous football rivalry with the William Penn Charter School, which celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2006. Who's got the offical answer? The Philadelphia Daily News/Inquirer also back this information.

Merging the lists of high school football rivalries[edit]

To me, the time distinction of the football rivalries based on age seems arbitrary. There is currently this list of high school football rivalries and a List of high school football rivalries (less than 100 years old). I am recommending that the two be merged under the title List of high school football rivalries. Thanks, Golem88991 18:01, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that List of high school football rivalries (less than 100 years old)will be a list that will tend to grow quickly as more editors start to add their schools. I created the new list to solve that problem and make it easier to find the rivalry of interest. Let it wait for 4 to 5 months, until after the high school football season is over and see if either list has become cumbersome.67knight 00:38, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standards for inclusion[edit]

Per my keep !vote at the AfD for List of high school football rivalries (less than 100 years old) , there should probably be some standards for inclusion so as to keep this article manageable. These standards would also apply to List of high school football rivalries (less than 100 years old), and I will cross-post this to that article's talk page and to the AfD accordingly. I think the fear of all of those !voting 'delete' is that everyone and their brother will be adding their alma mater's rivalry, regardless of how notable is is outside of their respective schools. That said, I would propose that anything that can cite reliable sources as to fulfilling any of the following regarding the rivalry or rivalry game is notable enough for inclusion:

  1. Attracts a number of spectators that is at least either: (1) More than twice the combined student body population of both schools or (2) 10,000 spectators, whichever is larger.
  2. Is the first or second oldest high school football rivalry in a state or among a class of schools (e.g. public schools, independent schools, parochial schools, etc.) nationally.
  3. Already has an article on Wikipedia that is properly cited with reliable sources.
  4. Has been covered by a national or international news source. For example, several games on this list are mentioned as being listed among the top high school football rivalries in the nation by USA Today. Other appropriate news sources for this criterion include (but are not necessarily limited to, as I'm likely leaving some out) the New York Times, CNN, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, MSNBC, Fox News, the Los Angeles Times or non-local affiliates of or national news broadcasts made by ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC.

Comments and suggestions for tweaks to these standards are more than welcome. LaMenta3 02:37, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Framingham-Natick Thanksgiving Day game not on the list[edit]

This is a 113 year old (1904) rivalry, one of the few on the list carried out by public schools and one of the most popular games in the state of Massachusetts. It should be added to the list right away.
