early comments[edit]

Should we sort this list by region instead of name? --Chuq 05:37, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

To clarify the above comment, here is a quick and dirty example:

etc. --Chuq 03:07, 2 May 2004 (UTC)

Sort by state, harbour, etc[edit]

Yes!

Tabletop 23:53, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

As the number of islands grows it makes sense to sort by State and then group/region IMHO Robertbrockway 05:46, Mar 29 2005 (UTC)

Definitions of Groups[edit]

Groups might also mean river system or harbour.

Geography project[edit]

I plan on working my way through Australian geography, although it may take some time. I've started by trying to build a comprehensive list of NSW islands. I'll then expand the resulting stubs. Then I'll move on to another state. When I'm done with islands I'll move to another feature. Apologies in advance for the number of stubs. I promise they'll be temporary.

South Australia[edit]

I am sure there is more than one island in South Australia. Will check soon. Squirrelflu 11:16, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes: Wedge Island in the Spencer Gulf. It even has a Wikipedia article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.173.183.83 (talk) 10:53, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Islets?[edit]

Should this list include islets? - Shiftchange (talk) 05:10, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Is your question "should we avoid listing smaller islands"?  Unscintillating (talk) 00:27, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
No. I just want to know if this select list should include islets and isles for that matter. - Shiftchange (talk) 04:24, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Reason for Prod, abandoning this list as a viable reference point[edit]

  1. There are too many islands to list (viz the summary by pdfpdf re the 8,222 islands)
  2. there is no criterion for inclusion, as a consequence there is no indicator as to why islands are listed here, opening the potential for a range of poor editing decisions as to what is to be included, or not
  3. as it is poorly maintained and has no specific guidelines for inclusion the room for undue emphasis between states
  4. as a dismabig page/redirect, it is then to the states for smaller scope and potential for clearer inclusion criteria
  5. most state projects have inadequate coastal regionalisation articles/lists, (the imra simply complicates it further), this change may be a wake up call for better delineation of coastal region definition

Possibly re-configure to simply the largest islands per state, and then refer to smaller islands in state lists? There are many possibilities. satusuro 00:05, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I removed the Prod notice, because the discussion should be here. I agree with the above suggestion. Have a criteria for "largest" (area?) and then move all the rest to State and Territory lists. --Bduke (Discussion) 03:26, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Goodness gracious! It seems that perhaps I should consider the consequences of some of my "throw-away" comments? Well, here goes! (Please rip them to shreds if you have better options and/or solutions.)
  • I believe this page should exist, but like Sats and Bduke, I think it should be defined just what this page is about, and just what this page should contain.
  • I'm fairly confident that everyone agrees that a page containing a list of 8,000+ island names is ... "not a good idea".
  • Personally, I'm not altogether sure what this page should contain.
    • Regarding WA, I'm prepared to argue that "Island Groups" and Largest/"Most significant" is a good solution
    • Regarding Qld, the current list is (un-necessarily and un-usefully) far too large.
    • Regarding other states (and territories) I have insufficient knowledge to express useful opinions.
In general, I would like to think that my WA solution of "Island Groups" and Largest/"Most significant" islands would/will generalize to cover all regions, (but as I said, I have insufficient knowledge).
And yes, I also think that a tree-like structure with the second level being the states and territories is the best option.
But I'm open to suggestions. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:51, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
How about we limit it to created articles as well as islands which are notable due to being populated or some other criteria. - Shiftchange (talk) 11:57, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hmmm. Well, it would be bad faith to solicit opinions and then "shoot the messenger" when they supplied them, wouldn't it!!
Before I respond, I'd like to hear read your opinion regarding my "Island Groups" and Largest/"Most significant" islands thought. Pdfpdf (talk) 12:12, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
The suggestions here are important and to be considered. I do have a problem with 'notability' of an island, how does that fit? satusuro 12:07, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Sorry - not sure what you mean. Could you expand your comment please? Pdfpdf (talk) 12:12, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Reply - I have a problem with notablity - how is an islands notability ascertained? satusuro 14:14, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Good question! Answer: Buggered if I know!
Yes, I now understand the question, but (at this point of the proceedings) "So what?"
Surely it's more important to determine the fundamentals before we get into the details?
Pdfpdf (talk) 14:39, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Notability is simple. As far a list is concerned, an island is notable if it has an article. That puts the notability discussion over to the article on the island. If the article gets deleted, we remove the island from the list. --Bduke (Discussion) 20:41, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm impressed! (I wish all of my "problems" could be solved that cleanly!) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Tasmania[edit]

Listing 'Tasmania' as an island under "Tasmania" doesn't make sense! Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 04:43, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

I agree. Unfortunately from what I can find, there isn't a term or name for the part of Tasmania which is not King Island, Flinders Island, Macquarie Island, Bruny Island, etc. apart from "Tasmanian mainland". -- Chuq (talk) 10:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
The preamble says that the list is ordered by State or Territory ... since Tasmania is the State, only its offshore islands need be listed. Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 03:34, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

This Article Needs To Be Renamed To OCEANIA, Not "Australia".[edit]

Period. In Correct (talk) 10:30, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

But that's not what the contents of the article include. Perhaps you are after List of islands of Oceania? -- Chuq (talk) 10:46, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
