Talk:List of job scheduler software

Page contents not supported in other languages.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Can someone please explain the reason for removing products that do not have a Wiki page with a reason other than, "because there is no wiki page for people to click on"? I fail to see the logic in doing so as it makes this list useless if you wanted to compare with a product not listed. And it means this list is not comprehensive if there are known omissions, which makes this quite un-helpfull as an informitive encyclopedic source. —199.19.250.12 (talk) 18:21, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 199.19.250.12 and thanks for the question. We don't actually include every single piece of software in this list, but only those that appear to be notable. (If we included every piece of software ever thought about, it would get a bit messy and hard to figure out.) Our rule is that every notable thing deserves to have an article, so we generally use whether an article exist as to a rough guide whether the product is notable. If you want to start a new article on something, visit Articles for Creation. (If you register an account, you can create an article directly using the Article wizard.) Best wishes, RainCity471 (whack!) 18:56, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Its funny to see the historical changes of this page.
It started at 2009 febr 1 with:
Large-enterprise schedulers:

  • IBM TWS
  • CA 7 (mainframe)
  • BMC Control-M
  • CA AutoSys

Small-enterprise schedulers:

  • Tidal
  • Orsyp $Universe
  • UC4
  • CA ESP
  • Redwood Cronacle

Some eye-catching changes since then:

  • 2010 dec 27 UC4 from Small to Large
  • 2010 jun 11 Redwood from Small to Large
  • 2010 nov 25 Orsyp added to the bottom of Large
  • 2010 dec 16 Camellia added
  • 2011 jan 16 Flux and OpsWise added
  • 2011 mar 25 Orsyp added again
  • 2011 mar 29 Stonebranch/Opswise on top(!) of Large
  • 2011 apr 29 Orsyp moved from bottom to top of Large
  • 2011 may 10 Appworx added
  • 2011 jun 2 I started the discussion "In search for a job scheduling appl" in Linkedin
  • 2011 jun 13 Cisco Tidal added on top of Large
  • 2011 jun 14 SMA Opcon added to bottom of Large
  • 2011 jun 20 APM APC/PCC added to bottom of Large
  • 2011 jun 21 Flux almost at top of Large
  • 2011 jun 23 Platform added halfway Large

The decision to classify a product as "Large" or "Small" is quite subjective, not measurable thus not wiki-like. And every vendor would like to classify his product as "Large". So I would suggest to classify the products on their functionality. I think the support of ERP's like SAP is a good start. This also gives the vendors of the "no ERP support" products a challange.
Henk.Wiersema (talk) 21:49, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree -- the use of large vs. small is vague and subjective and should be removed. Also, shouldn't the list be arranged alphabetically?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.102.147.35 (talk) 16:42, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was already working on a list of ERP supported products on my Sandbox page.
See also my google spreadsheet with all info up to date.

Replaced the 2 lists by 2 tables[edit]

I replaced the subjective 2 lists "Large" and "Small" by 2 tables "With" and "Without" ERP Support. I also sorted the companies alphabetic. And I added a description for each table column.

The result is, when viewed, a very informative table, from which a customer could make a first choise.

However, when editing, the table code is ... lets say ... difficult. An empty cell means I dont now yet, and some cells might contain wrong facts.

If someone wants to alter some cell content, just leave a message in this talk page, and I will change the table asap.

Changes at the introduction of the 2 tables[edit]

These extra changed were made when I added the 2 tables.

  • The CA scheduling products (Autosys, CA ESP, CA 7 and CA dSeries) are placed in one entry (CA will provide me with some detals soon)
  • The Platform Computing Symphony is removed, LSF is remained
  • Appworx is merged with UC4
  • Added APM, ASCI, ISE and Skybot.

--Henk.Wiersema (talk) 17:50, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Updates for Vinzant SW[edit]

Thanx unknown (IP-address) for updating the Vinzant SW entry.

--Henk.Wiersema (talk) 22:57, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List cleanup[edit]

I cleaned out list entries without demonstrated notability per the stand-alone lists guideline and write the article first. List articles are meant to be navigational aids to other Wikipedia articles, not a dumping ground for software products that are not notable enough to meet the inclusion criteria.

-- MrOllie (talk) 22:58, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vendor/products that were removed by Mr Ollie, that have indeed no wikipedia article, so I have to write a wikipedia article about::

  • APM Software - APX
  • ASC - Activebatch
  • Cisco/Tidal - Tidal
  • SMA/Unisys - OpCon
  • UC4 / Appworx - Automation Platform
  • ISE - Enterprise Schedule
  • Skybot/OSM - Skybot Scheduler
  • Vinzant SW - Global ECS
  • Sypsoft - Job2Do

Nice examples of neat vendor/product wiki pages:

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Henk.Wiersema (talkcontribs) 15:34, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And he also removed the web page links, they should be on the article pages.

--Henk.Wiersema (talk) 20:09, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List update[edit]

I updated the list, it now only contains products for wich a wiki page exist, or for its vendor. Products with none are commented-out to keep the line. Current manco's are listed below, with suggested wiki page name:

--Henk.Wiersema (talk) 10:57, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone has the updated list of each software licensing model? Freeware, Open Source, Commercial and so on. This is missing here in this list.

Mainframe job scheduling tools[edit]

As requested in some reactions in my linkedin discussion, I'll add some mainframe job scheduling tools too (if there are wiki pages for it). Up to now these are:

  • Workload Automation ESP Edition (CA)
  • Workload Automation 7 Edition (CA)
  • AutoMan (Exspans systems) OS/390 and z/OS
  • Zeke (ASG)for z/OS and VSE Enterprise Event Scheduling

Changes after adding the two tables[edit]

It's fun too to see what happened to the tables after I added them.

  • Me: Updated JAMS scheduler from info by Scott McCausland
  • Fluxdavid: Corrected Flux's Data Storage entry in the table.
  • Howlang: added Skybot Scheduler, it may be defined as "notable" software.
    • MrOllie: Reverted the Skybot Scheduler entry without article.
      • Howlang: Undo of MrOllie's removal, and transformed Skybot/OSM into a wiki-link to a non-existing wiki-page
  • ASCIMrktng: Added an entry for ActiveBatch
    • TeapotGeorge: Removed the ActiveBatch entry, Revert spam.
      • ASCIMrktng: Re-added the entry for ActiveBatch, and an unknown made some improvements
  • Alexf: removed ActiveBatch and Skybot Scheduler Wikipedia:Notability
    • Howlang: Undo of Alexf's 2 removals, so ActiveBatch and Skybot Scheduler are back
  • Dlfleish: Added ZEKE (Allen Systems Group/ASG)
  • Unknown: improved Dollar Universe

  • Me: replace the two tables completely, and made some minor improvements
  • MrOllie: remove Job2do ans Quartz with only external links from list of products per WP:EL
  • Unknown: improved Control-M entry

Well, the Skybot Scheduler page is ceated meanwhile, but there is still no wiki page for ActiveBatch (first on my todo list above), so that entry is still missing. I will add Zeke from ASG to my todo list. I have corrrected the data storage for Flux.

Changes in 3 months[edit]

It's good to see that several people were making several changes in the past 3 months.
Me:

  • Several improvements on JAMS Scheduler

Ppeltriaux :

  • Added Lance_scheduler

Tvecere:

  • Skybot/OSM  Skybot Software

Unknown:

  • Added TlosLite

Nbrown05:

  • Created a Wiki-article on ActiveBatch, which is already nominated for removal due to unsufficient reliable sources
  • ActiveBatch activated (was commented-out), made some improvements and added wiki-links to Advanced Systems Concepts, Inc and ActiveBatch

Unknown:

  • Several improvements on Control-M and Cronacle

Unknown:

  • Changed Flux into Skybot Scheduler, which was already there: why??? I reverted this weird change.
  • Added Batch Job Server by Camellia Software Corporation but without a link to a wiki page

Product removal: no wikipedia page[edit]

I removed these products for there are no wikipedia pages on the product or the vendor:

  • Opswise Automation Center (Stonebranch / Opswise)
  • JobServer (Grand Logic)
  • Batch Job Server (Camellia Software Corporation)
  • TlosLite (Likya Teknoloji)

In fact, I only out-commented the table entries.

Currently out-commented products:

  • With ERP support:
  • APX (APM Software)
  • Automation Platform (UC4 / Appworx)
  • Without ERP support:
  • Enterprise Schedule (ISE Xuis)
  • JobServer (Grand Logic)
  • Batch Job Server (Camellia Software Corporation)
  • TlosLite (Likya Teknoloji)
  • Visual TOM (Absyss)

After creation of a wiki page, the entry can be activated again, but dont forget to link the wiki page.

Lead section needs expanding & softening[edit]

The lead section may not meet Wikipedia specs. It's 1) too vague, and 2) too technical. Often attempting to be 100% error-free leads to too vague, useless (but error-free) "definitions." Often explanations can be focused/condensed with qualifiers like "typically," "generally," or "most often." The article is riddled with jargon and lazy hypertext links(no unlinked inline prose definition or clue). In the lede this is particularly unacceptable since many readers are here just following an inline link and only want a quick, general definition. Also suggest giving some interesting task examples, including both business, and general PC home computer user. Examples pin down and give meaning to vague general concepts. Most accurate sentences are insufficient, even poor definitions/explanations.

See also Wikipedia:Manual of Style (lead section):

"The lead serves both as an introduction to the article and as a summary of its most important aspects.

The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any prominent controversies. The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic,...and the notability of the article's subject should usually be established in the first few sentences....

...consideration should be given to creating interest in reading more... The lead should ... be written in a clear, accessible, style ...to invite a reading of the full article." End extracts.

Semi-protected edit request on 24 April 2014[edit]

Hi I'd like to get the UC4 line re-enabled on this list. It should link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automic as they are the company that sells that product now. Shownde (talk) 14:55, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Automic has no sources, so there is no verified information there that demonstrates anything should be added to this list. --Ronz (talk) 15:14, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: The page's protection level and/or your user rights have changed since this request was placed. You should now be able to edit the page yourself. If you still seem to be unable to, please reopen the request with further details. (tJosve05a (c) 20:36, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Moved the JobScheduler entry[edit]

Moved the entry as there is no SAP support. See Is JobScheduler certified and integrated with SAP?. Made other minor corrections in line with the JobScheduler page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by A-Amos (talkcontribs) 12:31, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria unclear[edit]

I'm not clear from the comments above what the inclusion criteria is for the lists. I'm trimming to notable entries, that is entries that have their own Wikipedia articles with sources that meet WP:N. --Ronz (talk) 18:15, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also confused. I arrived here looking for a comparison of Control-M and TWS to find that TWS is not even in the list. There's a comment above saying that it has no wiki page (as of 2011) but it does now ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Tivoli_Workload_Scheduler . I'd imagine that this is sufficiently widely used software that more people than just me would expect to see it here — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.161.116.190 (talk) 12:02, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why has the Redirect been added?[edit]

This article now (21st Feb 2018) redirects automatically to the Start-Class "Job scheduler" article with no explanation/discussion in this talk page other than the redirect banner. I find the loss of this article a pity, not just because I regularly work for one of the companies whose products were listed in this page, but also because I find generally this sort of software feature comparison article on Wikipedia useful and regularly use them myself rather than trying to sort out which of the "Ten top programs for ....." articles appears to be halfway unbiased. A-Amos (talk) 10:06, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This list is horribly incomplete, a lot of enterprise schedulers that have been on the market for decades are missing. It would be necessary to define the scope more clearly, so we can understand if we should add software we know or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.104.167.254 (talk) 19:33, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria[edit]

@MrOllie: The entries on this list range from "Not notable" to "barely notable". Many entries' wikilink redirect to the parent company rather than the product. For this reason, I feel it would be appropriate the change the WP:LISTCRIT to "individual entries need not be notable. Since this page does not have a huge following, I think we can make this the consensus ad hoc. Do you have an objections to changing the inclusion criteria? Mottezen (talk) 19:17, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do object. If some nonnotable stuff has ended up on this list, I think it would be preferable to remove the nonnotable/redirected entries. Lists of software like this one frequently grow into unmanageable product directories (we're not supposed to have those) without firm inclusion criteria. I prefer that drive by promotion (for example) stays out of this list. - MrOllie (talk) 19:26, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TBH I get where you're coming from now and I agree. I won't press the issue any further. Mottezen (talk) 19:32, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also pinging Ronz/ @Hipal: who started a discussion on inclusion criteria a couple sections above. - MrOllie (talk) 19:28, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In the five years since, I'm more against articles like this than ever. Lists like this are unmanageable and tend to violate NOT and OR/POV rather blatantly (eg in the criteria for the column topics and their arrangement).
Keeping the inclusion criteria to notable entries makes it fairly manageable at least. --Hipal (talk) 20:25, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
