Article renamed[edit]

This article was formerly called List of most common surnames in Central America but that was untrue. It was a list sourced from a single article in the Costa Rican newspaper, Al Día about the most common surnames in Costa Rica (only).

The newspaper article states explicitly that the list of names does not come from a formal statistical study ("Pese a que no hay un estudio formal sobre el tema"). Rather, it is an informal collection or compilation of names as the basis for a newspaper article ("una recopilación para Al Día"), not for a scientific paper. This is not rigorous statistical analysis, nor, crucially, does its scope extend beyond Costa Rican borders to include the rest of Central America. The Al Día newspaper article states unambiguously that data was harvested informally from the Costa Rican Civil Registry ("Registro Civil").

Accordingly, the article was moved from List of most common surnames in Central America to the more valid List of most common surnames in Costa Rica. --O'Dea (talk) 08:45, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
