Change Article Completely

Looking at this article, should it really be a list? The page Tourism in Ireland should not redirect here as Tourism in Ireland is a very important part of our culture and this page just doesnt do it justice. I think it should look like one of these: Tourism in Singapore , Tourism in Japan or Tourism in Israel. This page should still exist, but just as a related list to the main article. WP:LSC

What is the selection criteria for the members of this list?

Every year the tourist boards release lists of the top paid and free tourist sites on this island.North and South And yet, many members of these (clear and verifiable) lists are conspicuous by their absence from "our" list (like Kylemore Abbey, Fota, National Aquatic Centre, Doneraile, Farmleigh, Ulster Museum, Lagan Valley Park, etc).

And yet, while we are ignoring those, we seem to have decided that a small beach in Donegal (which according to its own article is undeveloped and largely unknown) is worthy of listing. As are some hills and lakes, which - with every respect - don't seem to be any more notable than their neighbours. Or, with the greatest will in the world, Coleraine - which falls behind Magherafelt in terms of TripAdvisor attractions in the county - is somehow a significant tourist attraction(?)

Without clear inclusion criteria, this article is (as it has been) open to "I like this place" type additions, and promotional bumf for specific hotels or pubs and the like. If no other criteria can be found, then number of visitors (perhaps over 50,000 or 100,000 annually) would seem like a reasonable place to start.... Guliolopez (talk) 22:52, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

Support Agree that this list is a magnet for everyone's favourite beach and arguably better suited to Wikivoyage and, even there, broken down county-by-county. As was pointed out in the Change Article Completely section above, a proper Tourism in Ireland article would be more suitable for Wikipedia. I doubt that many readers are using this list to plan their Ireland trip! I'd be happy to have it cut way back to the top lists you indicated and making sure that places like UNESCO heritage sites are included. I looked at a Discover Ireland sample county list here but there are way too many sites even for a small county like Carlow. But certainly some inclusion criteria are needed to keep this list under control. Declangi (talk) 03:24, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Declangi. Especially for the note on UNESCO sites. I hadn't really thought about them. And whether they might need to be an exception to any "visitor numbers" rule (as they are definitely notable, largely regardless of visitors). However, while I haven't investigated yet, I don't think we'll need to apply an exception there (the chances are the numbers for the Giant's Causeway and Brú na Bóinne are "up there". And while the numbers for the Skelligs may not be, an exception can easily be applied - on the basis that visitor numbers there are limited by statute/conservation rules.) In terms of a "proper Tourism in Ireland article", I would note that the equivalent state-specific title, List of tourist attractions in the Republic of Ireland, is a redirect to Tourism in the Republic of Ireland. While an all-Ireland article would probably end up being something of a content fork or replication of that article, once we/I have done a first pass on the content here, we might take a look at whether a big long list is the best way to deliver that content. For now, prior to amending the list, I will leave this thread in place another little bit. To see if there are any other thoughts. Including other stuff I hadn't thought of. Ah, I wasn't aware of Tourism in the Republic of Ireland, it's nicely done. An all-Ireland article might be nice at some point in the future as it would tie in with Tourism Ireland and the aspiration to all-Ireland tourism objectives. UNESCO sites: as you say, there are only three and the two ex-Skelligs would already make a list like this. But the main objective for now should be some quite limiting criteria and lots of trimming! While some of the remaining entries are of the "can't be bothered finding refs, but also can't really justify removing them" variety (like Stephen's Green or Temple Bar or Galway), and some are of the "don't think they strictly meet the criteria, but seems overly pedantic to leave a whole country unrepresented" variety (like Altamont/Carlow, LoughKey/Roscommon and Festival/Monaghan), I think this is much better than it was. To the extent that I'm not really inclined to take it much further myself. Not right now at any rate. I'm largely happy to close this thread now. Guliolopez (talk) 01:26, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
