Pix idea[edit]

Does anyone fancy uploading this image: http://www.hackney.gov.uk/xc-lido-proposed.jpg to the site? It's the architect's drawing for how the new lido will (hopefully) look. I can't work out how to do it :/

Pix added[edit]

Not such hot pix, but I got there late. (Actually I think London pubs look best at night. The park pic isn't so great, but it is a change from the usual 'lots of trees in the sun, yawn...' stuff.)

I have removed the statement that London Fields is part of Dalston, since in modern times no-one thinks of it that way. In fact, I believe it is now a district of Hackney with a distinct character of its own, and I will alter the Borough page accordingly to point to it.

Added a 'stub' reference to the art scene, which is very important in the area. Visual art in east London is treated poorly on Wikipedia, and likely needs a top-down revamp.

The stuff on Broadway Market needs moving to that page with a link from here, but I have left it for now, as the market page is not very good. Tarquin Binary 17:54, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum: Consulted with several Hackney friends (phone and pub) who all found the original assignment of London Fields to Dalston bizarre. All of them (sample size 6 including me, bit anecdotal...) reckon it belongs to an area of Hackney called 'London Fields' :) Tarquin Binary

Addendum 2: London Fields is strictly speaking within the ward of Queensbridge - see Hackney Council's own map at http://156.61.27.41/MapGallery/Maps/Administrative%20Boundaries/New%20Wards/New%20Ward%20Queensbridge.jpg - lighterthief

Addendum 3 I'm quite aware of that map, and was hoping to use it as background to a commentary later. But, basically, if you unleash ward maps and boundaries on the encyclopedia (if you want that horror, I think you should moot it at the London Wikiproject), everything's up for grabs - in every borough of London, not just Hackney. And many people will not even recognise the (tiny) area they have been assigned to.

Frankly, ward boundaries are merely electoral conveniences, to be forgotten till the next polling day. Real districts, on the other hand, possess either historical or contemporary resonance. The problem is in deciding which districts, past or present, are real. Tarquin Binary 22:32, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Galleries[edit]

Hey Tarquin - have been staying away from Hackney pages for a while. Flowers East is a bit of a way from the park. The Hothouse and a small artist run space called Seven Seven contemporary are right there. Also a thing called Mile of Art happens each year in October where local artists set up stalls across the park.Piersmasterson 17:37, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact FE moved to Kingsland Road a while back, I know (think they were seminal in creating a buzz round there, though). Will remove that, should add it to Shoreditch, but meant to add Hothouse and other galleries nearby - go for it. Tarquin Binary 17:54, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There *is* a flowers east building though, on Richmond Road (where the cycle track crosses over on its way to the Town Hall. Anyhoo. There is another gallery recently opened down the bottom end of Broadway Market too, next to the new bookshop. AFAIK the Mile of Art has only happened once so far, last year, but the Hidden Art festival usually sees a fair bit of activity in the area.Lighterthief

Tone[edit]

Hi, some of the tone of the article is a 'little peacocky'; and could be made more encyclopaedic. 20% house price increases? - not recently - some of this needs revision too. The final Flowers building has now closed and is being redeveloped. I was just looking for the acreage! Kbthompson (talk) 16:26, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added some history links - one includes early cricket matches - the other the development (and protection) of the area. HTH Kbthompson (talk) 16:38, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
