Bible as Fiction[edit]

A section within the article lists that there is some reference to the idea in the bible. The section of fiction then states that "Other works of fiction which use these tropes include", implying that the bible is fiction. Is this intentional?

and besides the Bible is hardly Western. It's oriental. 93.219.186.162 (talk) 17:44, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Examples from history[edit]

So, anyone going to finish this? Yes. I am NOT a beliver in this Love at first sight thing. I think you need to get to know the personbefore you can ask them out.

Meh[edit]

Okay considering that said event is unproven and actually defining love has been a life long( and somewhat fruitless) career for thousands of both amateur and professional philosphers (poets, etc) maybe there needs to be alot more use of the word "supposedly" in this article or some similar edit, or maybe just delete the whole thing Eno-Etile 06:45, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The article incorrectly assumes that the phenomenon exists. -205.153.156.221 01:17, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you believe me if I tell you I've fallen in love with a boy just seeing him, and he has told me the same..Do you believe me if I tell you that as I knew he existed before I had the strange feeling I was going to end up with him? So let the article stay

No. Not to be entirely age discriminant, but by your wording and way of speaking, I'd say let a few years of experience go by to understand the concepts at hand a little better. 69.19.140.49 21:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uncited[edit]

I can't believe this article doesn't cite a single article! It is far, far from encyclopedic. Can someone fix this?--Thomas.macmillan 06:30, 15 January 2007 (UTC)It does NOT exist. period.[reply]

I believe[edit]

I just found this article, looking up ideas on "love at first sight". I was very surprised at what I found. I must say, I didn't realize such an article existed. So, i will say my part, and people may comment if they wish, of course.

I was with the same man for 6 years, and married for 4 of them. Through a messy divorce process, and attempting to mend a life long series of broken heartedness, I have found my love at first sight. I recently met a man, I won't say where, and I won't say how, but the moment our eyes met, I knew I had found my "missing half". If that means it is "love at first sight", then so be it. It has transformed me, literally over night, into a better, stronger person. I could not imagine being happy without him, or continuing my life without him. So, for all of you who don't believe, or understand "love at first sight", that's your own opinion. For those of us that do, AMEN! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.179.48.140 (talk) 02:51, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I looked up Love at first sight and read this article. After reading the above comment,I agree it does exist. I had it happen to me on Dec,9th,2008. And its getting better everyday!!--70.157.34.59 (talk) 17:14, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graeco-Roman conceptions[edit]

Have reverted last edit to this section, which I think didn't achieve what it meant to do. Can see possible case for reducing size of section (if that was intention); but needs to be done in a different fashion Jacobisq (talk) 10:09, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Examples from anime/manga[edit]

If, as fans always stress, anime and manga are merely mediums and not genres, why does every article on literary and cinematic tropes include a list of examples from anime/manga? If such such examples absolutely must exist, wouldn't they do well to be listed within the appropriate headings of film, television, etc? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.230.52.69 (talk) 07:26, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Anime and manga overlap with books, comics, television, film, and video games so they tend to be listed separately so as not to cause redundancy with the rest of the media. The examples listed should be for the most obvious cases though, and not for minor characters or minor instances like when someone drinks a love potion or is placed under a spell. not much of an article[edit]

First of all, this is ~70% a listing of "media examples of 'love at first sight'" rather than any sort of actual article. And as with the majority of Wikipedia lists, few of the entries offer any attempt at outside support, and the whole thing has become a random heap of fanboy/fangirl trivia. Therefore, in order to leave room whence an actual article might grow, I propose moving the trivia section to its own page, and propose List of media examples of love at first sight as the title.

Scanning the list, I note nobody has mentioned erroneous instances of LAFS, such as Luke Skywalker being smitten with Princess Leia.

That example calls my attention to further gaps. In the article proper, there needs to be some attempt to differentiate "love at first sight" from "lust at first sight." Having experienced both, I contend that they are entirely different experiences, with entirely different goals and therefore outcomes. To be a credible article, this needs to be addressed.

As well is the question of directionality: just because X is smitten with Y does not mean the feeling is reciprocated.

There is the matter of control, perhaps even of violence. Sexual desire is not necessarily (or even often) love; the impulse to use sex as a weapon of control over another is certainly not in any way a "loving" sentiment. Yet in literature, particularly "romances," rape is often portrayed as proof of deep love; for example, when Roark rapes Dominique in The Fountainhead.

There ya go. This article needs much work.
