Cause of death[edit]

The article states that Hunter died of 'throat' cancer, which was reported in the media at the time; but the wikipedia page link directs to Esophageal cancer. The oesophagus is not medically considered part of the 'throat', but is rather the tube that transports food and drink from the throat (pharynx) to the stomach. The lay term 'throat' is normally used to refer to the pharynx (usually oropharynx or laryngopharynx/hypopharynx rather than the nasopharynx). I remember seeing a TV program a couple of months before his death, where he mentioned that he now sounded like Mickey Mouse due to the throat surgery - presumably pharyngeal surgery, as he was able to phonate (sound produced by the vocal cords) normally, and did not appear to have had a laryngectomy (where the larynx/voice box is removed and the patient breathes through an opening in their neck). Oesophageal surgery that does not extend to the larynx/pharynx does not normally affect the sound of the voice.

There is not currently a general pharyngeal cancer wikipedia page, but there are pages for Oropharyngeal cancer and Nasopharyngeal cancer. Without a reliable source, though, it is unclear whether Hunter's cancer was either of these and not laryngopharyngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer (which does not have its own wikipedia page). Cancer of each segment of the pharynx has a section on the more general Head and neck cancer page. I think it would be more appropriate to redirect the wikipedia page link here.Nqr9 (talk) 00:03, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this idea. I've changed the article's attributions to [[Head and neck cancer|throat cancer]].shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 06:57, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A belated thanks. Similarly, I'm going to remove the 'deaths from esophageal cancer' category from his page, as he did not have (primary, anyway) oesophageal cancer.Nqr9 (talk) 09:17, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
