Rename[edit]

The name Orissa is in the process of being officially changed to Odisha. See talk:Orissa for a discussion of how quickly Wikipedia should respond. The name used in this article should reflect the name of the main article: rename to "Maritime history of Odisha" when the article on "Orissa" is renamed to "Odisha", but not before. Dubious reference[edit]

The first reference, Dr. Bhagaban Panda (1997). "Maritime Activities of Orissa". Economic history of Orissa. Indus Publishing. p. 117ff., seems to me to be of dubious accuracy. The tone of the source seems inappropriate for an academic text (although I confess I do not know what would be considered appropriate), it cites a religious text uncritically, the claims are fantastical and I have found no other source for the claim that steam engines were used, or that they were even mentioned in the Brahmanda Suranda. As with the Boita article, I've taken the liberty of removing the offending statements, although I've left the other derived statements in since I can't tell if they are inappropriate or not. Hope I didn't break anything. Whitecroc (talk) 12:43, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Section removed[edit]

I have removed the Java subsection under the Overseas contacts section. The reference used is dubious and has no accessible primary or contemporary sources. Some citations are placed in the referenced source here and there, but are not adequate — The reference does not provide citations with the exact page number, and many of the paragraphs from the sources have no inline citation. Some parts of the article are even based on legend, not written sources such as inscriptions, so it is very dubious. The Kalinga expedition to Java in 65 B.C. may have used Pustaka Rajyarajya i Bhumi Nusantara as the reference, a book within Wangsakerta manuscripts, which has been proven as a modern fabrication. I have removed the Bali subsection under the Overseas contacts section. The reason is similar to the above, the reference used may not meet the criteria of WP:RS, and it has no accessible primary or contemporary sources. The reference does not provide citations with the exact page number, and many of the paragraphs from the sources have no inline citation. It claims that the island was named after a legendary king of Odisha—This is, of course, a preposterous claim with no historical backing. The festival Bali Jatra is mentioned through testimonial references, so not a proper historical reference. Surijeal (talk) 22:55, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the Malay peninsula subsection under the Overseas contacts section. The references used are outdated, the first paragraph tells very little about the Odisha connection, and the contacts are conjectured from the sending of missionaries. In the second paragraph, there is an extraordinary claim about the conquest of Burma, which is not mentioned in the Burma section. Again the references used are outdated. The last sentence The Malayu language contains many words derived from Odia language, so does Sanskrit — I don't see how this is notable enough to be included in the article.
