Integration of H NMR signals

In the article, it gives the integral for the aromatic hydrogens as 3. In reality it is almost always reported as 1. The reason for this is that integrals in H NMR data are often reported as relative numbers. Since there are 3 identical aromatic hydrogens and 9 identical benzylic hydrogens in this compound the integrals are reported as 1 and 3 respectively. Its the chemists job to understand that both of these relative integrals must be multiplied by the common factor of 3, to get the absolute number of hydrogens in each case. It would be the same for a compound with 4 hydrogens of one type and 32 hydrogens of another type. The integrals would be reported as 1 and 8 respectively with 4 as their common factor.

It's not unusual at all to list integrations to match the number of equivalent hydrogens, so referring to it as 3 in this case isn't wrong. But at the very least, the statement is ambiguous and irrelevant, so I have removed it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:05, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
