Recent updates pretty much complete, comments and suggestions needed[edit]

When I started to update this article back on June 11th, I thought it would take me about two weeks. Its now seven weeks later and I'm finally pretty much done. The next step is for others to review what is here and to (i) either edit the article themselves, (ii) add comments and suggestions to this discussion page, (iii) send me comments and suggestions via e-mail to jeff.ogden@umich.edu, or (iv) let me know that you like the changes and you can't think of a single thing that would make the article better -:).

I'm particularly interested in:

  • comments about topics that should be included, but which aren't there now;
  • suggestions about how to make the article less University of Michigan centric (I've tried to do that already, but since I'm from Umich myself, I may not be a good judge);
  • feeling about the length of the article. Is it too long? Ive tried to deal with the length by using two hidden sections that can be expanded, but I don't know if that does the trick or not. Let me know what you think. If you think it is too long, what should we do about that? Could the article be split into a main and one or more sub-articles? Are there sections that could be shortened or completely deleted?

If you'd like to see what the MTS article looked like before I started my changes, click on this.

In the course of updating the article on MTS, I ended up creating two new articles and updating a few others. Comments and suggestions on those would be most welcome too. They are:

I was going to start a Missing history section, but this looks like a reasonable place to hang this. The article could use a bit more history, in particular
  • The influence of earlier time sharing systems, e.g., CTSS
  • The relation of the 360/65M to the abortive 360/64 and 360/66
Of course, it's possible that, e.g., CTSS, had no influence, but if that is the case it deserves mention. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 12:29, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RJE and Data Concentrator developments[edit]

Excellent work. One area that comes to mind is the RJE and Data Concentrator developments that made NUBS and West Quad remote stations possible, as well as dial in access. Based on PDP-8 and PDP-11 systems they were forerunners of terminal servers that came (and went?) in the 90s. BS ECE 1977 Davesnotthere (talk) 18:51, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dates for the installation and use of the IBM 370/168 and the Amdahl 470V/6 at UM[edit]

Four years later, I'm back.. because someone mentioned Hercules support in the CCtech list. As a UoMich student from 1973-1977, I distinctly remember that we transistioned from the 360/67 to the 370/168 to the Amdahl 470/V6 during those years. The Amdahl V6 history in the CHM [1](where the CPU evidently now resides) says that it was installed 1975. The date problem seems to stem from the UoM reference article on the MTS timeline. A footnote in [2] indicates others sources have contested the original document. -- Davesnotthere (talk) 23:39, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

After scouring through the Computer Center Newsletters archived I have pinned down the operational dates of: IBM S370/168 came online in the UoM Computing Center in Jan 1975. CCN V4,N17 [3] The Amdahl 470/V6 was installed in July 1975 and was Accepted for use September 30th CCN V5,N17. [4] -- 24.147.101.66 (talk) 03:50, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
