Major edit - 20 Feb 2011[edit]

In copy-editing I have Wikified: compacted text, removed weasel words, loaded terms, fan-speak, blogese and some unsupported claims that existed. I have restructured paragraphs for a better and more logical read, added citation requests for the remaining unsupported claims, and requests for dates.

I have removed aggrandizing bold text over certain names and places, removed names of people who don’t in themselves appear notable to the article, and changed the familiar and unencyclopedic "Mickey" to "Finn" or "he". I have converted viable external links into in-line references, and added internal Wiki links, categories and a stub template.

If the apparent quotes below cannot be authenticated, they will be removed through suspicion of original research and editorializing:

  • “he was taken under the wing of Brother Forrestal” – who was Forrestal, and who said this ?
  • “the style of Michael Coleman, the Sligo fiddler” – who said this?
  • “and became popular for his rock/trad/jazz fusion style, never playing a traditional tune exactly the same way” - who said this?
  • “Although this may not have gone down well with the purists, the sessions were memorable” – who said this?

I have removed what appears erroneous links:

  • The photo of Flinn at [1] is hardly revealing, and there is no indication that it is copyright-free, essential for Wikipedia,
  • Mary Staunton link [2] mention's Finn but is about her, not Finn. The Mick Lally obit. [3] is about Lally not Finn, only mentioning him in passing. Both links could be added as external links.
  • The Jim Bartley management page [4] is off-the-subject, and promotional.

The 4 in-line citations for Frankie Gavin are too many – this is not an article about him – ‘though he is notable enough to have his own article... any takers? He does mention Finn in passing so these cites are probably best as external links.

If anything is reverted, do this with adequate linked evidence to corroborate assertions, from reliable independent sources that can be in-line cited.

If external links are added, see Wikipedia:External links for what Wikipedia considers viable – in a nutshell, a web blog is generally not viable, and commercial/selling, or promotional web sites such as facebook and myspace, are not acceptable as necessary third party original sources. An official web site for Finn would be viable.

Could an editor with good detailed knowledge of Finn’s life and career extend this article, especially his early life? - everything cited/referenced of course, and with no trivia or personal opinion. Any future edits that display Wikipedia:COI or non-Wikipedia:Verifiability and are not added from a Wikipedia:Neutral point of view will be swiftly removed.

Photo[edit]

There's a nice photo via http://gerrycarthy.com/BioPage.htm; it's possible that the webmaster would give permission to add it to the commons. Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 11:39, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea if we could get the web master to upload to Wikipedia. However he/she would have to own the photo/s - I've know that at least one on the Carthy page has been copied from newspaper or other web pages. The photo presently in the article here doesn't appear to have Licensing so there might be a problem with it.
Thanks for your work on the article - I was intending to return to work on it again after Finn's brother Johnny had included all he had to offer, and to work on the raw URLs under Refs and External links which are mixed up at the moment. I would have put the now major sections Contemporaries/Dicklerfitz/Christy Moore/Media as level 3 header sub sections of Career, as they are all subservient to, all part of, and all reliant on his career. Frankie Gavin[edit]

The references to Frankie Gavin should be cleaned up, probably only one is needed but I don't have time to look through to pick one. I did add an article request; Wikipedia should have an article on him. Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 12:00, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It does - "Frankie Gavin (Irish fiddle player)" has been moved to "Frankie Gavin". RashersTierney (talk) 12:36, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing[edit]

The "references" section needs to be gone through; it looks like several of the {{citation needed}} can be resolved by that. Right now there are a lot of bare links without titles, unconnected to the sentence they're supporting. Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 12:09, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it needs a lot of work. Is the Galway Advertiser really a reliable source? It appears to be a free weekly paper.--Cúchullain t/c 12:54, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Death[edit]

What did he die of, at such a young age? In Galway a few years ago I rather got the impression that he had drunk himself to death. I would be happy to learn that this was not the case. Paul Magnussen (talk) 19:37, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
