Why is Molly Pitcher a "legend"?[edit]

"Legend" suggests that deeds or persons are more folklore than actual history, but the deeds of Mary Hayes at the Monmouth Battlefield seem fairly well attested to. The name shift (from Molly Hayes) is well accounted for within the story ("Molly! Pitcher!") The fact that she was hardly unique in taking her husband's place in battle (e.g. Margaret Corbin) hardly weakens the credibility of her own accounts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.32.125.70 (talk) 10:28, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
