Misattribution[edit]

I believe that the attribution to Moon Unit Zappa of the title 'Ship Arriving Too Late To Save Drowning Witch' is erroneous. If I recall correctly, the cryptic drawing which appears on the album's cover is a 'droodle' by Roger Price, the 1950's humorist who created the genre, and the title is his as well. (A droodle is a simple drawing which cannot be interpreted without its caption.)

It's not difficult to find some through Google, but unfortunately Moon Unit Zappa doesn't look at all like the stereotypical Valley Girl. By the way, boy are you people on the ball! FWIW, I was told by a woman who was a classmate of Zappa's at the time the song came out that Zappa was imitating other students at her San Fernando Valley school. There was apparently a negative reaction from her peers because she was perceived as lampooning them publicly. So it would not be correct to see Zappa as a protypical Valley Girl any more than it would be correct see Stephen Colbert as a typical right-wing TV host. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 20:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

like?[edit]

Just because Moon uses the word "like" in the single doesn't necessarily mean that the song is the source of the word "like" in the American lexicon in its current form. That's a gigantic leap of logic (especially considering the song is already BASED on an American pseudo-dialect that existed independently from Moon). Valley Girl did not put "like" in the lexicon. It *might* have put it into popularity nation-wide, but even that is pretty questionable considering the word was already being tossed around in at least one part of the country before the song's release. There could have been millions of other things that caused the word to spread across the country, including the real life "valley girls" themselves. It's good to mention that, because "Moon Unit" sounds like a two-part first name instead of a first name and a middle name.
