Head Master[edit]

As there appears to be some confusion / uncertainty to the Head Master / Teachers name the page has been reverted to John Wilkinson as head, for which there is references. Andrew Ireland is acting head until the merger of Myers Grove and Wisewood schools in 2011.

Famous people who attended? One of the members of Heaven 17 (can't remember which!) and James Toseland, world superbike champion both went there. Both were highly critical of the school in they're respective autobiographical writings.

There is an interesting film of Myers Grove, made in the early 70's I believe, in the Yorkshire Film Archive. The pioneering nature of the school seems to have led to later problems with management leading to poor behaviour and poor exam results. Tradition was given a huge emphasis upon foundation of the school, based upon public school practice it became inappropriate as time went on. For example, there were "houses" within the school named after disappearing colonies and the "Grove Game" (a sort of rugby game in fancy dress between staff and students) none of which sat well with the mainly working class student intake. The decline really started with the disappearance of the sixth form and continued to the point where the school achieved notoriety in the local press following the failure of an Ofsted inspection and the reported poor behaviour of its pupils. According to reports, weak management led to a power vacuum with general dissent amongst staff and self interest groups preventing any real progress until 2008 when, despite great leaps forward, the school received another poor Ofsted report. Following this, a decline in student numbers leading to better staff/student ratios combined with other strategies have led to a huge improvement in results and behaviour.
