It's a U.S. Census Bureau distinction. A household is defined as "all the people who occupy a housing unit as their usual place of residence" while a family is "a group of two or more people who reside together and who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption." I.e., persons in a "household" are not necessarily related. For example, a group of friends sharing an apartment might be considered a household for Census purposes. olderwiser 16:26, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
