[edit] something seems off about his age

in the 4th paragraph of the early years section, there is a sentence that reads: "During his seventh grade year in January 2002...". if mayo was born in november 1987, and that sentence specifically states "JANUARY 2002", he would be 15 years old at the time. but the sentence also says "during his seventh grade year". seventh grade? where most people are 12-13 years old? has mayo been held back 3 times? did he start going to school 3 years late? am i missing something here, or is that sentence and year wrong, or his birthdate wrong? some clarification would be nice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.118.71.19 (talk) 09:14, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Most people where I'm from start kindergarten at age 5, so they are 14 usually when they start 7th grade. Mayo was 19 going on 20 in November when get graduated high school (2 years older than most). He has to have been held back or started late or there was a point where he was not in school. I know all about cutoffs (here in NJ if you don't turn 5 by at least the end of october you can't start kindergarten until the following year.) So say he missed a year because his age was after the cutoff, he still would have to have been held back for 2 years. I'm sure the age is right though, as all the scouts refer to him as 21 at the start of the season, and the columnists do too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dannyry (talkcontribs) 19:51, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Source for school changes ?

What is your source for changing the school list for Mayo from WVU and Wake to Duke and UNC?

I removed all individual school listings, since he has not publicly spoken about any schools lately.

  • Good call. I added the rumoured schools in the first place, but there is just way too much speculation right now. The latest buzz around his hometown is that he, Walker, and Bob Huggins will show up at Marshall University, but who knows? Youngamerican 00:20, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Real Age

I believe there is some controversy regarding his real age and rumours of him being held back a year. Can anyone confirm this? (Brodey)

Yes. I'm very confident in his listed birthdate as the Louisville Courier Journal questioned it a few years ago as well and sent someone to the courthouse in his hometown to get a copy of his birth certificate. Nov 5, 1987

OJ mayo WILL BE 19 when he graduates.... and thus can still go staight to the NBA right? this article states to the contrary

[edit] NPOV

The line in the first paragraph "He is thought by many to be the best high school basketball player in the United States" may need to be removed, or an authority cited. rhmoore 22:54, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

I toned down the language and added two decent sources. youngamerican (talk) 15:51, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Naming

When there is doubt, the usual naming convention would be "O. J." However, Mayo goes by "O.J." in the press and his daily life. youngamerican (wtf?) 00:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I believe you are misinterpreting WP:COMMONNAME. That merely says he should be called "OJ Mayo" as opposed to "Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo". That's where the press and daily life sources come in. However, on Wikipedia, it should follow the WP:NCP AND WP:COMMONNAME#Exceptions and be written as "O. J.". The space between the initials is purely a formatting thing that all articles on Wikipedia should follow. — X96lee15 (talk) 01:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
I would agree with you except for the fact that he, himself, uses "O.J." (no space) as his name and it should be one of the exceptions, much like MC Hammer and Breece D'J Pancake and others who use quirky punctuation to self-identify. y'american (wtf?) 01:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
As I'm trying to sort all this out (not just with Mayo), I'm curious if you have a source that says how he formats his name. Not a source that shows his name as "O.J. Mayo" but a source that talks about choosing to go by "OJ" and how he formats his name. Just looking at his full name (Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo) and his nickname (OJ Mayo), I don't see where this should be a special case. — X96lee15 (talk) 13:08, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Good point. While it is known around town that that is how he chooses to spell his name, local common knowledge alone isn't good enough for the 'pedia. Go ahead and do the move and I'll revert if and when a valid source comes along that illustrates a lack of a space in his initials. y'american (wtf?) 13:36, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
