Conflict of interest, books from a single publisher being promoted[edit]

I should explain why I tagged this article. 90% of the article was written by a single user who has ties to Caister Academic Press. This user has been spamming wikipedia articles with citations to Caister material. Note that all references in this article, except for one (entered by a different user), are books from this one publisher. The article gives undue weight to obscure topics in oral microbiology such as "Veillonella," which does not deserve an entire subsection. The appearance is that this subsection was created so that books from Caister could be cited. CatPath (talk) 16:23, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation. I still think that {{unbalanced}} conveys your concerns more than {{one source}}, unless it were tagging a particular section. I'm a little confused as to why the information is being retained in the article if it isn't important to the topic. There's no reason why sections need to remain just because one editor made them. If the information is relevant and could be summarized, that should be done. Otherwise, I would think that it should just be removed. The real issue seems to be with a user or publisher. If they are a problem across articles, it should probably be addressed in a central location. I can't recall ever seeing a publisher singled out like this, so I'm not sure if there is precedent. —Ost (talk) 19:24, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I agree with your argument. I put the {{unbalanced}} tag back. I raised the problem with the user here[1] a year ago, and others raised the issue at ANI[2] back in 2008. There may have been other discussions that I'm not aware of. Most of the problematic articles have been rewritten or removed, although I still run across sections or even entire articles that the user copy-pasted from the publisher's books. I removed the copy-pasted sections from this article a while ago. The other issues with the article will go away with the merger with Oral ecology. Needless to say, I'm in favor of the merger. When reading this article I would agree that there are areas of improvement. First, I would like to see more references, and in text citations. An example of where this is relevant is in the third paragraph where it explains how oral bacteria have evolved mechanisms to evade their hosts. Also, as it has been mentioned, I would like to see some other references than from simply one publisher. Another edit that I would like to see is an addition of links to other wikipedia pages for clarification. For example, the innate host defense system is mentioned within the text. Some readers may not understand what the innate immune response is, and this would be a perfect area to link to the innate immune system wikipedia page. Another key word that could be linked to a separate wikipedia page is in the introduction when it mentions that bacteria colonize an ecological niche. Readers may not understand what an ecological niche is, and there is a nice page that could be linked to, which describes what an ecological niche is. Thirdly, I feel that there could be more information added in the sections about vaccination against oral bacteria and the section on the role in non-oral disease. Each of these has its own section with only one sentence beneath it. This article would benefit from the addition of information in either, if not both, of these sections.
