BLP removal[edit]

I've removed the following text which was inserted by a now-blocked user who has done nothing but use Wikipedia to further some sort of political campaign I've never understood:

"Oyston is good friends with the Labour councillor Roy Oldham and Lord Pendry who defended him on his rape conviction whilst he was an MP.House of Commons Hansard Written Answers for 21 Oct 1999 (pt 11) As of the 18th of August 2007, Pendry has become a shareholder of one of Oyston's companies Oyston Steel Estates Ltd REGISTER OF LORDS' INTERESTS. This comes after Gordon Brown urged party members not to accept any donations from Owen Oyston."

The text is not properly cited and is at best OR. 1) Whilst the first quote shows that Pendy asked a question to the Solicitor general about Oyston, it does not evidence the 'good friends' assertion, the mention of 'Oldham' or that the letter 'defended' - all that may be true but it isn't referenced. And in any case without comment by a reliable secondary source this would be OR.

2) The second citation shows Pendy is an (unpaid) Chairman of "Oyston Steel Estates Ltd" and has accepted their hospitality, it does not actually indicate he's a shareholder, or that the company is connected to Owen Olsten. Nor does it indicate the relationship to Brown's urging. Again, even if true, this is OR without good media comment. With negative comments on a BLP, we need impeccable sourcing and evidence of notability, this does not cut the mustard.

On court papers (which is the only place you will ever see it used), his full name is always given as 'Owen John Oyston' (e.g. Owen John Oyston v The Royal Bank of Scotland PLC and R (on the application of Blackpool Football Club Properties Limited and Owen John Oyston) v HMRC). Conflicting Dates[edit]

"He was initially arrested on 9 February 1996[10] At the committal in May 1995, one of the alleged rapes and two separate charges of indecent assault were thrown out by a stipendiary magistrate. Three charges against him came to trial. He was cleared of two but found guilty of one rape. His first trial for indecent assault, against a former model, was in February 1996" This makes no sense, if he was arrested in February 1996 how did his committal hearing happen almost a year before and the trial in the same month as his arrest? Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Concerns about references to convictions and acquittals[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians.

I do not believe Wikipedia should provide a platform for lengthy denials and mitigations by criminals who have been convicted of some of the most serious offences against the person.

I would like your opinion on whether the copy below the headings "Conviction", "Appeal" and "Release From Prison", should be substantially edited to remove unsourced and uncited allegations of dishonesty, specifically "lies" by one the alleged sexual offences victims and the negative inference that she only complained about Oyston after she was contacted by police. However, it is not unusual for victims of sexual offences, particularly young victims, to only come forward after they learn their alleged attacker is under investigation. The article contains a similarly negative inference about a trial judge extending the indictment period for a 16-17-year-old rape victim. Not least because Oyston was actually convicted of raping this young woman for which he received a six-year jail sentence.

The article then details Oyston's plainly false claims he was the victim of a government level conspiracy to bring him down and his post-conviction claims of innocence, despite his not mounting a successful appeal against his convictions and the consequential defamation of the young woman he was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting, to whom he later paid substantial damages when she mounted a £500,000 civil compensation claim against him.

I propose removing the unjustifiable and unsourced material and replacing it with an independent narrative of the facts around Oyston's sex crime trials with citations to contemporaneous news media court reports.
