Pronunciation/spelling of Pasha's name[edit]

Hi, I studied Russian. I am wondering if Pasha's surname is in fact pronounced 'Kovalyov'. Gorbachov's name was spelled 'Горбачёв'. The diaresis on the 'e' changes the pronunciation from 'ye' to 'yo'. Has Pasha had to drop the diaresis and bow to the wrong pronunciation of his name? Can anyone tell me? Thanks. Ann
