As most of those reading this can probably imagine, it's extremely hard to properly address such a complex, sensitive and tragic series of events in a single article, not to mention individually, without suffering some degree of tension in the process.
Nevertheless, I have tried to at least begin to address these issues, by presenting the most common perspectives and plenty of diverse information and sources on the subject, in my humble opinion. This should be categorized with the FARC. Only the most extreme and uninformed view would say that there was no link between the UP and the FARC. This article even makes that point, stating that "The UP was founded in May 1985 and several prominent FARC members were among the party's original founders," as well as mentioning "FARC's preeminent role in the new party" in that "FARC ideological leader Jacobo Arenas... was a leading figure during the party's inception and early development, being the UP's informal leader within FARC and initially was heavily expected to be its presidential candidate." It even says that "In general, members of more orthodox sectors within the UP tended to be more openly supportive of the FARC's activities both morally and potentially materially as well, while more unorthodox sectors, though often also justifying the existence of the guerrillas as a consequence of social inequalities, tried to establish a clearer line of distinction between the FARC and the UP.... Some individual UP members were also accused of providing intelligence and material assistance to FARC fighters." As the UP and FARC were clearly related, they belong to be categorized together. --Descendall 16:10, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
- UP was a project which was supported by FARC at an initial stage. it was never the political wing of it. They were organizationally separate structures, with very different dynamics. --Soman 10:26, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
UP was an UNION of FARC with democratic Left Wing Movements like the Communist Party. It was never an all FARC political party, when the FARC left the group the UP still existed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.59.22.115 (talk) 09:45, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

- The notion that they were providing intelligence to the FARC was actually an excuse used by their assassins -- whether or not it's true hasn't shown up in any peer-reviewed publications I know of. Anyhow to move the article would be highly inappropriate, as the UP was explicitly nonviolent and obviously part of the Legal Left, unlike the FARC.
