Evaluating Wikipedia – Photoswitch – BtotheotherB

The current Wikipedia article on the topic Photoswitch is a great start to the topic but is lacking a vast amount of information and accuracy. From the very first two sentences, the description is weak and somewhat inaccurate (a photoswitch is very different from a molecular machine; it is important that we do not confuse these or use molecular switches and machines interchangeably). It is ironic that the Chemistry subheading has such little information on switches. It has great examples and is a great place to start, but there isn’t anything interesting aside from some name dropping of different types of photoswitches. What is going on when a molecule switches its conformation? How is light interacting with it? What are some of the structures of these different molecules and how does the structure affect the properties? There should also be many images added that show photoswitches (a diversity of chemical structures, UV absorbance spectra, NMR spectra, etc). The Applications subheading is also a great start, but it is lacking depth and breadth. This subheading should get the reader excited about all of the great consequences that arise from the interaction with light. Where is the inspiration? Figures and images should be added to show some of the awesome applications that photoswitches are involved in. Again, where is the inspiration? This article does not show the biological relevance of photoswitches. There are many examples of how light affects biological molecules, but this page is lacking information. I want to inform people about why biological switches are so interesting and also how chemists can/should be inspired by these complicated architectures. I want to expand on the references. There are currently only ten of them and the last reference is a patent that is not applicable to this Wikipedia page; it needs to be removed. It is referenced in the Issue subheading, but it is not clear what this is referring to or describing. I want to bring in a diverse number of authors who have not only published in well respected and high impact journals, but who are masters in this field of study. I want to make sure that this article does not overlook smart women and smaller groups who have contributed to a better understanding to this field of science; as far as I can tell, this article does not have a female contributing author. My plan for making the necessary edits will expand upon the basic rudimentary knowledge of this topic. The subheadings of Chemistry and Applications will be greatly added to and many more subtopics will be included to accurately describe photoswitches. By the end of my edit, this will be a page that students will be able to visit to get a fantastic and easy to read review that encompasses all of the wonderful and exciting aspects of photoswitches.
