Article focus[edit]

I am not clear as to what the article is supposed to be about
The Edinburgh council area, which is also a city?
The City of Edinburgh Council?
Or the politics of the City Edinburgh council area (hence the info about constituencies)?
I get the feeling most of the content would be better positioned at "Politics of the City of Edinburgh council area", referenced as a "main article" in "Edinburgh"

This article is at the correct title, and should be about the present day council area called 'City of Edinburgh' (and its council and possibly constituencies), which is not a city, and is not the same thing as Edinburgh. ::Supergolden:: 12:06, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So what is Edinburgh? A city? If so, what sort of city? I believe its now the council area (or its representive council) which now holds the [[City status in the United Kingdom|city]] title. Perhaps by ""city"" it is [[city]] Supergolden means. Laurel Bush 14:05, 15 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Council area and city are one and the same thing! It is a council area because the City of Edinburgh Council represents the city, and the existence of the representative body helps to define the area as a city, in the sense of having "city status in the United Kingdom". As the title of an article. "City of Edinburgh" does not define the artcle as having focus different from "Edinburgh". "City of Edinburgh Council", or "Politics of the City of Ediburgh council area" would make a very important difference. The article is not about the City of Edinburgh
It is about the City of Edinburgh Council, and the politics of the council area more generally
"City of Edinburgh" should become a redirect to "Edinburgh"

MSP list[edit]

Should MSPs include the Lothian list MSPs, as they cover Edinburgh as well?

The article does list 'additional members' elected from the region. Perhaps it should say something about party representation for the region as a whole (taking accout of constituency MSPs elected from outside Edinburgh). Laurel Bush 17:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Constituencies since 1708[edit]

Image:Edinburghlogo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. Merge suggestion[edit]

I propose that The City of Edinburgh Council be merged into Politics of Edinburgh. The article name to be used is open to debate, personally I am more familiar with the West Coast convention which use Glasgow City Council with Politics of Glasgow as a redirect; however, I see that the article covering Dundee is Politics of Dundee with Dundee City Council as a redirect. Aberdeen currently also has both a Politics article and a City Council article, which again seems unnecessary and I will be making the same suggestion on those pages.

Much of the content in the two articles (neither of which is particularly large) is repeated, or relates to matters which could be covered under the same article. Some of the content of the Politics article refers to national events such as the 2014 Referendum, but it correctly focuses to Edinburgh voting patterns so its inclusion would be justified in an article mainly on the local authority.

Comment by proposer: thanks for the above comment. However, having considered this, I am now of the opinion that the presence of two articles is valid, and wish to withdraw the proposal; I will instead look to make/seek improvements to the Glasgow article with a view to splitting it similarly into historical and current articles; with sufficient content it would be justified as exists for the other cities, but I would say that the content is not at the required standard and breadth to separate at present.
