(Potrzebie)[edit]

(Unit)[edit]

There's an inconsistency in the description of the length unit with this name. Here in this article it says it's equal to the thickness of MAD issue #26, but List_of_strange_units_of_measurement#Potrzebie says it's issue #23. I presume that whichever issue it is, there's a copy printed on platinum-iridium pages stored in a vault at bureau international des poids et mesures? :) Bryan 23:50, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

26 is the correct issue, and I have fixed the "Strange Units" page. Google image search can turn up scans of the venerable Issue 33 pages where the article first appeared. The image itself is unsuitable for upload to Wikipedia, due to copyright issues, although I suppose someone could inquire with DC comics/MAD magazine to see if they would be willing to allow the use. The curious (or those seeking a source) may find a scanned copy of one of the pages here, and might try using the Wayback Machine if it should vanish. abb3w 14:25, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)

(Need-related meaning)[edit]

It doesn't actually mean '"as needed" or "as necessary"'. It's the objective case declination of "potrzeba", a noun which means "need". "w potrzebie" is probably the most common usage of the word, and it literally means "in need". By itself, the word makes absolutely no grammatical sense - which is why I always found it particularly bizarre and jarring while reading MAD magazine. :) I will attempt to fix the description in the article without being too verbose. • After finding the stem POTRZ- in another context, I asked a Polish-born German woman about it; she spoke English, German, and Polish, and she told me that potrrzebie meant "It is necessary to me" or "I need," much like the Spanish Me necesita or Russian мне хочеця. Having difficulty assimilating the presence of z after two other consonants (and knowing nothing about Polish at the time), I pronounced the word "por-truh-ZEE-bee" as a child. In Mad's parody of Superman, there was the phrase, "I'll bounce out of here like Potrzebie!" Dougie monty 11:57, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
    • I need is in polish potrzebuję. It's very similar to potrzebie, but they differ by u. Confluence is right. Dobromila (talk) 15:33, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
    • Depending on how it's used in a sentence, "potrzebie" can be either the dative or locative case of the noun potrzeba, need:
Nasza organizacja charytatywna pomaga dzieciom w potrzebie. - Our charity organisation helps children in need.
Co myślisz o potrzebie zwiększenia podatków? - What do you think about the need to raise taxes?

Fair use rationale for Image:Potrz12.jpg[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Image:Potrz12.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

why no mention of What It Was, Was Football? mad's 1958 version of the transcripts (illus. George Woodbride) carried the term.

although this may have been the 10th or so usage, it should merit special attn since the audio is well known outside the magazine. in fact, many people who have never even SEEN a copy of mad magazine know these illustrations full well from the online video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNxLxTZHKM8 66.105.218.10 (talk) 21:04, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
