race cover[edit]

There is no mention in the article "Race Record" about what were called "race covers" during the late 40's and throughout the 50's. Many black artists had written, sung, and recorded the iconic and popular songs of those years. However, radio dj's were forbidden by their station managers or owners to play "Negro music". Too many times the very same song was rerecorded by a well-known white singer to be acceptable to white audiences. The song would go on to be a big hit on the Billboard charts. The black artist would go on to anonymity and lose all the royalties and credit for their work. Doris Day and Pat Boone were two artists that I know of who made race covers of black music. I'm sure there were many, many black artists who were cheated by the music industry of the time. I see no obvious sources in the literature to support the term "race cover", but the general idea is probably sourced here and there. If you find a book which describes the practice, bring it into the article, using the book to support the text. Binksternet (talk) 21:23, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is discussed at the article on Cover versions - though not as fully as it should be. Like Binksternet, I'm not aware of the particular term "race cover", but the practice itself was well-established and may indeed be worthy of a separate article.
