Comments regarding restaurant ownership[edit]

Last week you acknowledged David Gagnon’s 20 years of service to the town. I applaud him for his hard work, but the article said his father, Al Gagnon, was the originator of Red’s Eats.

I remember the true "Red" with fondness when as a child my father took the family to Red’s Eats for a grilled hot dog. The place was named after Harold "Red" Delano. I took it for granted that he was the originator until I read an article by Phil DiVece in the Wiscasset Times from 1987. Because Al Gagnon was celebrating ten years as the owner, Phil wrote a front page tenth anniversary article. It explains the origins of Red's Eats.

In the first days of Red's Eats "Judge Allan C. Pease owned and operated it as a teenager, earning money for law school," Phil wrote.

Red and Millie Delano were the first owners to give it a name. Gladys Light purchased it from Red. Somewhere in the scheme of things, Stan and Velma Dodge – former owners of the Dodge Inn – and Frank Hammond owned it. In 1977 Al purchased it from Loa Blake.

This error prompted me to do some research. Thank you for giving me the chance to learn more about the history of Red’s Eats. Anyone wanting to learn more about it, should go to the Wiscasset Public Library and ask to look at the 1987 bound edition of the Wiscasset Times and look up the article Phil printed on September 10, 1987.

The above comments, which appear to be a letter to the editor of a newspaper, can also be found at: http://www.wiscassetnewspaper.com/09_24_09_Opinion_WISC.htm. The comments may be valid, but I'm not sure if a letter to the editor qualifies as a reliable source under Wikipedia's guidelines; further digging may be necessary before this information can be added to the article.
