Additions in March 2017[edit]

Recent additions have been reverted because of poor quality references, adding information that adds WP:UNDUE emphasis to minor details and adding information in the wrong sections. This is a settlement article, linked to numerous others where more detail might be relevant. It has been through the GA process to ensure the quality of its prose. Snippets of information are rarely useful and it is better to use the original source for old newspapers which can be accessed online, often via public libraries or subscription. Citation needed[edit]

Information appearing under Industries suggests a mill was located in woodland close to the reservoir, John Rawlinson identifies two mills, in his book About Rivington, 1969, neither were located in the village and neither were used for corn. A mill existed next to Rivington Hall, these two mills are not mentioned in the article here. He does mention a facility being built to create cement for the reservoirs construction using water power, its location is not specified. Unless the statement can be verified it is pure speculation to state a mill existed in the current woodland and does not belong. You are reading things into that statement that don't exist as there was no suggestion of woodland or the reservoir in that section of the article. I have added a map as a reference that does mention Mill Hill and a smithy. The conservation area map mentions Mill Dam Wood. I could simply have added the map but I rewrote it. Added citations is standard practice and they are now added, it certainly improved this rubbish "Foundations of a building that was perhaps a water mill or the manor corn mill are to be found opposite Mill Hill Cottages next to where a possible mill pond was shown on the 1848 first edition Ordnance Survey map" --Pennine rambler (talk) 12:05, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wilderwood[edit]

In the article under Industry is mentioned "Wilderswood Colliery, owned by Nicholas Fish, appeared in the 1869 Mines List." however the above colliery is not in Rivington, it is in Horwich. Any source to show that it provided employment to Rivington? The citation added "Coal Mining History Resource Centre" does not say so. It is some distance from the village which was known more for agriculture and weaving.

"Wilderwood Colliery, Horwich, near Bolton was worked over a large area by various concerns front the late eighteenth century to 16 August 1960. A large number of shallow shafts and adits accessed two seams, the Little Mine and the Great Mine. Rowland Adamson (RA) signed its abandonment plan on closure."
