Because he just isn't. I study Caucasian history extensively and I've never heard his work, research, or name mentioned in any type of article, book, document, etc.

Please do not attack Wikipedians! I have rolled back your changes because they were useful in providing context. Publishing an atlas and having published many academic articles is sufficient for him to be considered an expert. I have removed the word "leading" as that has yet to be established with multiple sources. I checked the link which this statement was sourced to but I found nothing to verify it. I did a pretty thorough and comprehensive read-through of the link, but sometimes people miss things(it's human) so if anyone can help out I'd highly appreciate it. Why shall we write the family name variant with -ian in bold letter? His Armenian origin or family name Armenian variant is mentioned already. If you have studied South Caucasian history and have never heard of Robert H. Hewsen then you are poorly acquainted with Armenian Studies in the West.

Hewsen has been publishing and lecturing in Armenian Studies for fifty years. He

has taught Armenian History at six major universities in the United States and abroad, and has published nearly 200 articles, most of them in learned journals.He has translated the seventh-century Armenian "Geography" of Anania Shirakatsi into English (Wiesbaden, 1992) as well as publishing another major work "Armenia a Historical Atlas" (University of Chicago Press, 2001,341 pages, 277 color maps), which not only surpasses any such atlas previously published in Armenian Studies but also surpasses any historical atlas published in any of the former Soviet republics. This atlas has recently been reprinted and is still in print after seven years.
