Merge suggestion[edit]

There is a great deal in common between the articles sea louse and salmon louse. Salmon louse appears to me more authoritative; sea louse is in theory a wider topic, but in practice adds little. I suggest a merge with a redirect. Any thoughts? --Wavehunter (talk) 19:39, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand correctly, you're proposing that this page, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, be merged into the genus page, Caligidae? What do you propose doing with the other Lepeophtheirus pages? pburka (talk) 20:21, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There may be other, better solutions, but the current state of the two articles is not good. Two of the three introductory paragraphs under sea louse are about the salmon louse. The morphology section of sea louse is just about salmon louse. Same with the fish farming and treatments sections of sea louse. If the pages are not merged, sections should be merged with one giving a brief introduction and pointing to the other as the main article. I see that most of the genera within sea louse are red links, as are most of the species within Lepeophtheirus. --Wavehunter (talk) 08:51, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There's certainly some opportunity to move content around, but I oppose a wholesale merge in either direction. One page is about a genus and the other about a species in that genus, and this is a well established pattern among our biology articles. I also note that the salmon farming section on this page relies far too heavily on unreliable and biased sources (e.g. farmedanddangerous.org) and is describing phenomena that aren't specific to this species. pburka (talk) 12:17, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On reflection, I think you're right - with the biological taxonomy point being the killer. I'll withdraw my suggestion. I have no way of knowing, but I think most readers visiting either page are interested in salmon lice and salmon farming. There is information on both pages (and yes, perhaps some is unreliable), but neither page is complete.
