Notability of the term "Crosswalk" ?[edit]

Does this term have any use in the metadata world outside of MARC?

It's a common enough concept (usually wrapped up in the "XSLT as panacea" fallacy), but I'm unfamiliar with this word being used to describe it. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have only recently come across this term having started work in medical data analysis in the USA - I would prefer to use the more familiar and generic term Lookup but it is certainly used in a commercial environment ourside of MARC --Rekstout (talk) 14:04, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't a lookup. Rather than a mapping from one value to a single axis, it's a mapping of axes to other axes. You might perform a lookup afterwards, to translate values within each axis, but "crosswalk" as described here is about the management of these axes, rather than just their values within one of them. If anything, it's a necessary (but distinct) precursor step to it). Andy Dingley (talk) 21:36, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have also come across this term working in medical data analysis in the USA. I had not heard the term before. I was very surprised to see that the page was all about museum archives. The way I've seen it is, for us (a health care provider) to get reimbursement for each patient, we must deliver 2 electronic files to the payor: a main file and a crosswalk file. The main file is automatically generated from our records and has standard patient info, while the crosswalk file has additional info that this particular payor wants that was not generated automatically. Both files have the patient's account number as an element, so when the payor gets it they know whose main file goes with whose crosswalk file. 67.110.143.19 (talk) 17:18, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This an extremely vague comment, but I think I hear "crosswalk" used in environments with database roots other than Microsoft SQL. I'm thinking specifically of higher ed database Banner, which is Oracle-based. bendodge (talk) 19:26, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
