Article revisions

Reviewing the current article on “School Meals on the United States,” I find valuable information that is provided, though I also find many gaps in the content to be filled and expanded upon. I propose to modify the current Wikipedia article on “School Meals in the United States.” My aim is to provide to users across the world a more developed perspective of food security and nutrition as they pertain to primary and secondary education in the U.S. I also want to provide more concrete examples of ways this issue is being resolved. Providing meals in schools has far-reaching implications for educational success of students’ from lower socio-economic backgrounds, with the goal being to elevate educational achievement and eventually narrow existing income and social inequalities in the United States. The existing article provides a good base from which to approach the issue. However, it lacks substantive content is multiple areas. I plan to revise the article so that it delves more deeply into the history of children’s food security, existing food initiatives and public policy solutions for the future.

I will both revise the current sections in the article and add new sections to expand on the topic. I will add sections that probe more into the topic of children’s food security, and how schools are used to attack this problem. Also, I plan on going into detail on numerous school meal programs that are successful, as well as those that have failed. I will provide a section on the perceived issues of these meal programs and expand on solutions that have been provided to alleviate these problems.

The current article has very few references, and my plan is to add more references to make the article both richer in detail and more comprehensive. The most limiting challenge I perceive is finding more published literature on specific meal programs for the content of my article. I will have to reach out beyond just scholarly articles to find articles and books that detail very particular food programs, as well as reflections on these programs.

I pose several questions to other Wikipedia users who may be able to aid me as I revise the page. What comments to do you have as far as my plans for revision? Where may I be able to find valuable references for the article? Considering the relative lack of scholarly information on this topic, how may I work to maintain a non-biased viewpoint? Hello Heidimkahle, and thank you so much for expanding the article! I can tell that a lot of work went into your revisions, and the referencing is looking much, much better now. I have a suggestion for how you can further expand the article as well. At the start of the article, what I really want to see is a description of typical school lunches in the United States - what kind of food is typical, what cutlery and crockery they use, where the students eat it, how the food is prepared, etc. At the moment the article focuses on the political issues relating to school lunches, but doesn't really cover the practical matters of what school meals in the United States actually are. This information would be very useful to people living outside the United States who don't have any direct experience of the subject. (I grew up in the UK, and the only knowledge I have about US school meals was gleaned through watching Saved by the Bell and other American TV shows.) It would also be a good subject to find images for - I bet there are a few lying around on Flickr that we could use. I have noticed that particular sections of the article, which were not written by me but by other uses, are lacking some sources. In particular, the "participation" section includes no sources. It is necessary for whoever authored this section to go back and include the sources he/she used to improve the article and be able to nominate it as a "good" article. New Additions, November 27, 2012

The new additions to the article add much-needed depth into the history of the NSLP, nutritional guidelines, and controversial issues surrounding government-funded meal programs. I highly appreciate these additions and I am glad that other users have started to contribute more depth and detail to the article. The new additions include some internal citations, but unfortunately the full citations are not included in the reference section. Please, if you can, go back to the article and include these full citations, using the Wikipedia guidelines for internal documentation. This will enhance the credibility of the article, allowing it to be nominated for a "good" article, which will then increase traffic to the article. Funding and Rising Costs

Funding and Rising costs data should be updated. The most recent data under funding is from the year 2012-2013. The rising costs is out of date as well. It has not been updated since 2012. I attached a link with the most recent rates of reimbursement. The link explains the amount of money the federal government provides states for lunches, afterschool snacks, and breakfasts.

Special Milk Program and Income Eligibility Guidelines

Readers should be able to understand how individuals are able to receive free or reduced price meals.
