Date of construction[edit]

The postcard picture image description states its an image from 1908, yet the infobox on the main article states a completion date of 1917. What is the correct date? VerruckteDan 12:42, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most likely 1908 since the first was destroyed in the late 1800s. --KCMODevin 20:10, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard[edit]

That postcard shouldn't have been removed, it isn't the original Hannibal Bridge, which was destroyed in the late 1800s and shut down because of it. It had arched trusses as seen in the following pictures:

This is obviously not the same bridge:

Hannibal Bridge around 1908 from postcard

If they are the same, and it was just repaired, it was basically just an entirely new bridge, as every truss on there is basically not arched as they were on the original. It is just probably labeled incorrectly. --KCMODevin 22:34, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's an interesting discussion. It's a source that says the original Chanute designed bridge lasted "half a century" which would fit with the 1917 timeline Race to the Sky: The Wright Brothers Versus the United States Government By Stephen B. Goddard page 54 (even though it's ostensibly about the Wright Brothers it discusses Octave Chanute. The bridge was way too important for the railroads to let it wallow for 30 years. From the pictures the tornado damage looked like little more than a collapsed span. Americasroof 22:52, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Then make a note that it was redone in the picture, so people don't fasely assume that the current one is the original. --KCMODevin 23:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another source via Newspaper Archives from the Chillicothe Constitution Tribune on May 25, 1935 in its 20 year ago column which says:
The Hannibal Bridge, the oldest structure across the Missouri River at Kansas City and one of the historic bridges of the river is to go on the scrap heap. The Burlington Railway Company, owner of the bridge, has let the contracts for the erection of a new structure, to be just west of the present bridge. Work will begin at once.
The Union Bridge and Construction Company of Kansas City holds the contract for the substructre. The building of the steel structure will be done by engineers of the railroad. The total cost will be slight over a million.
