Incompleteness[edit]

The list goes back as far as 1970 because Peart is the earliest Shadow Leader of the House I have been able to find with my limited resources. That Peart held the role is made clear by the source that shows Michael Foot taking the role: it says Peart is taking Agriculture and was "formerly Shadow Leader of the House". Peart had also been Leader of the House until 18 June 1970, when Labour lost the general election. It is therefore very likely that he took switched to Shadow Leader after the election and held the position for about a year and a half. Because the Leader of the Opposition, rather than the Shadow Leader, asked the business question until about 20 years ago, it is hard to be certain who the Shadow Leader was at any given time. With any luck, someone will be able to help fill in the details.

It is probable that there were Shadow Leaders before Peart, but I have found absolutely no trace of them. Presumably, the role only diverged from that of Leader of the Opposition sometime after the position of Leader of the House was separated from that of Prime Minister in 1942. Because of the War Coalition, it likely didn't happen until at least 1945.

For anyone trying to help with this research, something similar happened in Canada. The role of Government House Leader branched off from the Prime Minister in 1944, but the Leader of the Opposition remained Opposition House Leader until 1957. In both cases, it was the Liberal Party that initiated the switch. That may or may not be useful, but I thought I'd put it out there in any event. -Rrius (talk) 01:57, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
