Production: No Make-Up?[edit]

"In order to make the show more realistic, the actors, even females, usually went in front of the cameras without make-up."

I just finished watching the whole show and, guess what, there is make-up all over the place. The main characters, male and female, are all wearing make-up: Lipstick, hair spray, eye liner and whatnot. Actually I cannot remember one significant scene where actors are not wearing any make-up.

I don't know where the above information comes from but, in my opinion, it's not accurate. Or does it refer to the actors who are playing the Aliens, not wearing make-up under their helmets?

UPDATE: I've taken the liberty of adding the [citation needed] tag.

UPDATE: Removed.

Actually I would have just deleted it. If the info isn't cited, it could have been inserted by some random idiot who just happened a long on this page (which happens often). Ckruschke (talk) 13:52, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Ckruschke[reply]

Availability?[edit]

They no longer show Space: Above and Beyond on the Sci Fi Channel (United States). DrWho42 21:31, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do they still have the rights to it? thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 21:33, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think there is a DVD release--unsigned

There is indeed. thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 23:23, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The DVD is a 5 disc set, they are the front and back type of DVD. You can get it at Best Buy, Walmart, and lots of other places. Bigcurrens 01:53, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Release date[edit]

When was the series actually shown on TV? I know the article says its a 1990s series, but it would be useful to be more specific, as well as showing the different air dates for different countries. I am in the UK, and remember seeing some of the series on BBC2 in the mid-90s. WikiReaderer 17:59, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One small detail, possibly worthy of mention[edit]

One recurring feature of the show: flying into battle to the accompaniment of the Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop". Seems that one of the pilots landed on Mars and found a NASA probe with a "Sounds of Earth"-type CD attached to it; the pilot was able to play the CD, and liked the sound of the Ramones, which apparently was good for morale, as the squadron played it together as they entered combat. Its use was a bit like "Ride of the Valkyries" in 'Apocalypse Now|Italic text' .71.146.24.198 (talk) 23:15, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cancellation[edit]

Does anyone know why the series was canceled, and why it was never picked up in a book form? Scruffy brit (talk) 21:19, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Fox cancelled the series because the rating was not satsifactory for them. However, you have to consider the fact that Fox frequently moved the show's schedule around to fit in other sport programs, so you can't really blame the show for having a bad rating when viewers don't even know when the next episode is going to be aired. That's why when it was moved to Sci-Fi, that's when the show's popularity really grown.--207.6.227.14 (talk) 19:25, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Awards....[edit]

It would be nice if anyone knew what the 2 Emmy nominations and 1 Satrun nomination were actually for.... As well as more things about critical reaction, and, as above, factors in its cancellation (though it appeared popular and was played all around the world, even being released on DVD).

Product - Influences[edit]

Odd that no one mentioned Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" as an influence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.126.137.85 (talk) 07:22, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This show always struck me as reminiscent of the video game Wing Commander — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.53.67.191 (talk) 04:26, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Character profiles[edit]

Is there any particular reason as to why, on the list of characters, two of them have extremely detailed backgrounds and none of the rest have anything? If it's because of all of the detail on the story arcs, maybe some of that could be trimmed down (after all, this article doesn't necessarily have to be a one-page encyclopedia regarding the series) and moved to the appropriate characters.--MythicFox (talk) 10:34, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think its just personal preference/interest of the various editors. Agree with your other points. I would do a verbatim cut/paste of the character info as much of it is WP:OR and is of a "trivial" nature. Either way the page needs a major haircut, but I've never had the time.Ckruschke (talk) 18:13, 4 February 2014 (UTC)Ckruschke[reply]

Episodes list should be merged back to here[edit]

As per WP:TVOVERVIEW it is standard practice that TV series with only a single season do not have separate "List of [xxxx] episodes" articles, and instead contain the episodes list at the main TV series article page. As such, List of Space: Above and Beyond episodes should be merged back to this article. However, because List of Space: Above and Beyond episodes is slightly on the long side, I'm soliciting opinion on this rather than doing a bold merge back to here. I'll let this discussion run for a while, but a lack of comment will be interpreted as a lack of opposition to a merge. --IJBall (contribstalk) 00:30, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO if no one has commented in over 6 months, you've been given tacit permission for the merge. Nymless (talk) 17:42, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nymless: Thanks for reminding me about this! Honestly, it had fallen off my radar... Will try to merge that back to here in the next week or so. --IJBall (contribstalk) 17:50, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done – episodes list merged back to this article. --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:42, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign titles[edit]

Would anyone mind if I moved the information from the paragraph into a new column in the data table? --Khajidha (talk) 13:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Merging relevant information from Silicate and Chig pages (Proposal)[edit]

The Silicate and Chig pages are written in the style of a fandom wiki. Considering this series lasted 1 season and ended over 20 years ago, I propose that any relevant information from those two articles be merged into this article. This proposition was made in the Silicate page's Talk section over 10 years ago without objection. I will wait the standard 30 days to hear out any feedback from the community. If there are no objections, I will proceed with the merger. Ja0n8 (talk) 16:39, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support – even the content at this article is over-stuffed with "in universe" info that is inappropriate. It certainly doesn't warrant "spin-off" articles... --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:53, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • I've made the mergers. It's a big mess, but now at least it's one big mess, rather than a bunch of messes spread across wikipedia. Ja0n8 (talk) 21:13, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • Good. Definitely needs to be (seriously!) trimmed now, though – WP:INUNIVERSE is directly relevant to this... --IJBall (contribstalk) 23:00, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
        • Thank you for the link. I suppose I'll go ahead and watch the show, then begin editing the page from the top down. Maybe we can trim this back into a proper article. Ja0n8 (talk) 13:10, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Revising to Remove In-Universe Language[edit]

I will be going through the article to correct the tone and style. I believe this will result in a great deal of content being deleted. I will deposit the text of any major deletions here, so that others may reintroduce that material in a corrected tone. I will be using articles of similar series (Farscape, Andromeda, etc.) as model formats. Ja0n8 (talk) 15:40, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nazi Germany comparison?[edit]

In the technology section there is a remark how the technology is ahead of Earth in terms of decades, with a comparison to nazi germany, reported below. The similitude is contested by hidden text. Is it possible to remove it?

(cf. how Nazi Germany had better weapons technology than its enemies at the start of World War II, though mostly because it had been economically focused on military weapons development for several years)

User:Matramagic —Preceding undated comment added 07:55, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Matramagic: Any unsourced statement, esp. one that's controversial (a hidden note confirms that), can be removed. You don't need permission, so you can just go ahead and remove it. --IJBall (contribstalk) 13:21, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and removed it. Matramagic, be sure to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). Wikipedia will replace them with your username and a time stamp. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 19:18, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

STNG influence[edit]

I recall reading an article in Starlog in the mid-90s that quoted one of the show's creators specifically stating that the STNG episode "Lower Decks" was a primary influence, especially in how they wanted to focus on younger characters. I don't believe kept that issue, but it may be available online in an archive somewhere. I'll try to look for it when I have time, but if some else can find it, that would be good too. If it says what I remember, something should also be added to Lower Decks (Star Trek: The Next Generation)#Influences. Thanks. BilCat (talk) 23:12, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Starlog archive with all their issues. I found a little on the background of the show here, where it specifically states that the show was not based on Starship Troopers. I haven't been able to find anything else i. the archives yet about Lower Decks' influence. It's also possible that I read that in TV Guide around. I'll.to search for their archives too. - BilCat (talk) 23:35, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
