Split church into own article[edit]

I think it's time to split the church off into its own article. Both church and square are separately notable and should have articles. Oosoom Talk 18:23, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name / apostrophe[edit]

Hi @Oldhamtw: just noting that I've reverted your rename of the page to St Pauls Square. Per WP:RMUM, if you wish to proceed with the move you should open a formal move request (at WP:RM) and then explain the reason, and attempt to gain consensus for the change. The key point is that the WP:NAMECHANGES guideline needs to be met, in that reliable sources should be routinely using the "new" name. As far as I can tell, even though this change happened in 2009, many sources still use the apostrophe, e.g. [1][2][3]. Also, the street signs themselves as well as Google Maps still used the apostrophe as of 2023... See maps.app.goo.gl/ijq28B95sBdwNBwq6 (can't link that due to WP policy apparently) . Overall, I'm not seeing that a change of common name has occurred to match the change of official name.  — Amakuru (talk) 13:04, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An update:
I haven't yet got in touch with the council (they probably have bigger things to deal with) but the road signs don't help clarify the issue. As far as I can tell, 6 of the road signs around the square have 'St Paul's' and 9 have 'St Pauls'. I do wonder if this is a case where the presence of the former name on Wikipedia has hindered the changeover. I'll also be contacting Google Maps to see if they think the name change needs implementing.

Hi there! Apologies for getting the process wrong (WP:AGF). I don't know how much you know about Birmingham, but the apostrophe removal was a whole thing. I live in a suburb that's been dealing with the fallout from having the apostrophe removed for years (we're still phasing it out bit by bit). The council replaced half of the signs on this square and left the other half so that they could transition slowly in public perception... and it's still going on. Half the confusion comes from the fact that St Paul's Church (with apostrophe) didn't change its name, and still uses that form. Given the council policy hasn't changed, and everywhere else in the city has followed suit, I thought I'd update the wikipedia article.

I'll try and get an answer from the City Council (haha) to see if they have any answers Oldhamtw (talk) 16:01, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
