Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana is considered one of Indonesia's early nationalists. According to an article written by Edward Aspinall, "Takdir knew that history could be a servant of 'culture', and that writing a national history primarily aimed to construct a unified cultural identity upon which to base claims for independent statehood.
