Shaky plot[edit]

I've just read the book and the plot description here worries me. The wonderful thing about Bowen's writing is the subtle way she avoids stating things clearly, so you have to read between the lines in order to work out some hard facts. Take this for example: "Robert is a spy for the German government. He promises not to report Robert to the government if she leaves Robert to become his lover". But in fact it is never clear who Harrison is or whether he really has any official capacity. Robert does admit, late in the book, to working against the country but there is no mention of Nazi Germany. The whole section gives quite the wrong impression, as against the thorough analysis of the following sections. It's tempting to just delete it? ProfDEH (talk) 08:08, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
