If anyone has any other book covers they'd like to scan, in any language, please post them here! Also, I don't have a name for whomever translated the five books into Finnish, there's some dispute as to whether the Finnish radio adaptation was actually transmitted in Finnish or Swedish, and I could use publication dates (first year of publication, please) for the Finnish and French translations! --JohnDBuell | Talk 03:46, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

We could also use publication information for the Dutch and Swedish books! --JohnDBuell | Talk 01:46, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

Precision on french version[edit]

Anybody can insert this information, in good english? ;-) (section France)

The first title was "Le guide du routard galactique" (which is the correct translation of the english title). But the publisher (Denoël) had a lawsuit with Le guide du routard, who is a guide for travel (a concurrent of Lonely Planet). --82.67.156.31 17:59, 11 January 2006 (UTC) (Serged/?)

Done. Thanks! --JohnDBuell 18:47, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Romanian titles[edit]

Thanks to an e-mail I got from the Romanian publisher, I now have all five titles for the Romanian translations, but don't know who the translator was, or any other details. Can someone fill the rest in?

The five books are: "Ghidul autostopistului galactic" "Restaurantul de la Capatul Universului" "Viata, Universul si tot Restul" "La revedere si multumesc pentru peste" "In mare parte inofensiv"

Dutch version[edit]

< (Arthur Dent was originally known as Hugo Veld in the Dutch translation) >

As far as I know, he is still known as Hugo Veld in the new translation. Could anyone confirm this? MrTroy 17:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

No he isn't. I have a copy. --JohnDBuell 17:59, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, that means they have just re-used the advert text of the old edition for the new one. On all websites, that is. Once again proves how reliable the Internet actually is... Thanks for putting me right though. MrTroy 19:24, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I've noticed that too. I also heard, but can't confirm, that Ford Prefect was originally Amro Bank (or something like that). But he is indeed Ford Prefect in the new translation. --JohnDBuell 19:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
I read that too. Like Trillian was Trema (Dutch for diaeresis). MrTroy 19:54, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
That's a real pity. I produced the original radio series and found Rien Verhoef and Sjaak Commandeur to translate the original. Amro Bank was one of the high points of their translation! (Along with riding a scooter in Amsterdam's Damstraat).
One has to wonder how much influence Disney had in forcing new translations in time for their movie.... But the up-side is that the first translations will now have great collector's value. --JohnDBuell 16:38, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

"international phenomenon"[edit]

Isn't "international phenomenon" POV? User:Zoe|(talk) 22:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I'd agree with this. Several of the most devoted fan sites to the series are outside the UK (three are in the USA, Sweden and France). Adams made many book tours in the English-speaking world, and several outside it (such as recorded live readings of his novels in Germany). Despite his 2001 death, Adams still has MANY fans throughout most of the world, and I'd say that the mere fact that many of those same fans have contributed to fleshing out this article would only back the statement. --JohnDBuell 23:39, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I don't disagree with the international portion of it, it's the "phenomenon" part that seems POV. User:Zoe|(talk) 23:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Granted Adams never sold as many books as many other authors he admired, or many who have followed him (he's no J.K. Rowling, to pick a name at random), but how many other science-fiction series have been translated, not just dubbed, into other languages for performances on radio? I'd say that's rare, noteworthy, and indicitive of a phenomenon. The TV series HAS been widely dubbed, as has the movie, and thirty languages are no small feat (though again, to maintain the comparison to Rowling, Adams's works weren't translated into Latin or any such). I'd also say that the halfway-decent box office figures for the movie (US$104 worldwide, rankings of 11th for Sci-Fi based on book and 12th for Sci-Fi Comedy)Box Office Mojo Page, though I can't really find anything on DVD sales figures without a subscription, and heightened fan interest in the three final radio series as well as the movie, would back the claim. Now if you wanted to debate whether or not fan interest has hit a peak, actually I'd probably agree with that.... --JohnDBuell 00:41, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Why not call it International popularity of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? User:Zoe|(talk) 02:08, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Okay. 1) The page has been set with this title since mid-June 2005 with no objections. 2) The main section that it was forked from in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy article still has the section heading "International phenomenon" which survived both WP:PR and WP:FAC. 3) By which definition of phenomenon does this not fit? Quoting Wiktionary (and using definition 2, Geoffrey Perkins has famously tried to explain the success of Hitchhiker's by comparing it to the comic sensibilities of Monty Python):

phenomenon (Plural: phenomena)

  1. an appearance or occurrence, usually one evoking curiosity
  2. a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen but is unexplainable or questionable
The Merriam-Webster online definition parallels this: [1] as does their usage under phenomena: [2]. I'm sorry, but I just see no POV-ism being pushed here. The series reached early levels of success in several countries in the English speaking world by word of mouth, which moved it on to becoming a multimedia, and indeed, international phenomenon. --JohnDBuell 02:38, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Zap-O-Matic Gun[edit]

Under Italy, the article mentions a Zap-O-Matic Gun (and how its name was changed to Fucile Crepaben (Die-Well-Gun) in Italian). I do not recall any such gun; could somebody please explain where this comes from. I recall a Kill-o-Zap blaster pistol; perhaps that is what is meant. HairyWombat 19:44, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
